Chapter 60.1

Inside the Lu Family home, silence reigned .

The two people locked in the room together had each claimed a corner of the room . Mo Qianren was on the couch, reading through some documents, while Mu Rulan was across from him on another couch, drawing pictures .

Mo Qianren had never imagined that there would come a day he would sit face to face with a psychotic killer in the same room, peacefully focusing on their own work . The same went for Mu Rulan; she had never imagined sharing a space with the person she feared most .

No one could be sure how much time had passed when the man reading through the documents had a thought occur to him and raised his head: “You must have had dirt on the victim Wang Qiang . That’s how you controlled him to do as you instructed; you guided him through setting up those traps . That’s why all the weapons had his fingerprints all over them . ”

“That’s why you never had to go to the scene of the crime personally to set those up, right?”

If it was true, everything added up . Unless one could fly, how could someone escape completely without leaving a single trace at the scene of the crime?

The reason he couldn’t find even a single hint of her presence there was because Mu Rulan had never been there and had not set up those killer traps .

Mu Rulan paused, lifting her gaze to look at Mo Qianren, her shoulders lifting in a little shrug as if to indicate her helplessness, “Mr . Mo, you’re really persistent . ”

“And your answer?” Translated by The Novelst

“Has Mr . Mo ever seen a criminal admit guilt before presented with evidence?” Her words implied that his evidence was not enough, nor was his reasoning complete .

Mo Qianren then continued, “I found some ash and a pigeon feather in Wang Qian’s house . He lives on the fourth floor and coincidentally enough, there’s a window in his apartment that faces the street . And since it’s barred, he never really closed that window . ”

“Nobody in his neighborhood has a pigeon, and his apartment is quite far from the market . There’s zero possibility that a pigeon feather would randomly find its way into his home . So it could be you that wrote him a letter and let your trained pigeon deliver it to him, in order not to leave any trace of it all . ”

“The letter must have contained something he feared; something that he was afraid to let others know . That was why he would burn it immediately . ”

Not bad, this was all true .

Mu Rulan smiled deeply, putting down the pen she was holding and resting her chin on her hand as she looked at the man sitting across from her . “Please continue . ”

This implied he was on the right track .

“You deliberately asked me about how to best induce rigor mortis the day before the crime, but in truth you had prepared it all beforehand, even forcing the victim to walk through the steps of your trap several times so he would slowly become intimately familiar with the process . ”

“So that’s how you were to immediately have the victim change the trap settings after receiving an answer from me . It’s just that the victim was likely unable to fathom that the person you were targeting was himself . ” As he spoke, Mo Qianren’s brows furrowed tightly .

No, that wasn’t right . There was still one point remaining that confused him . If those traps had indeed been set up by Wang Qiang following Mu Rulan’s orders, then why on earth would Wang Qiang have suddenly stepped on a trap? How had she manipulated the end result?

Mu Rulan could guess where Mo Qianren was stuck . But she had to admit that this man was truly impressive, to be able to nearly unmask her modus operandi in such a short amount of time . It really did excite her .

He glanced at her briefly before plunging deep into his thoughts again . Mo Qianren still needed some time to break through that problem .

As more time passed, the door still hadn’t moved . Mu Rulan looked at the time and squinted her eyes .

“Are they planning to lock us in here the entire night?” She stood and walked to Mo Qianren’s side .

She finally began to understand why Mother Lu had been so warm to her . Her final intention had been to lock them in together . Though Mu Rulan was generally good-tempered, that didn’t mean she would bear everything without a word . Even if Mother Lu was an elder, locking her up without consent was not something she could tolerate .

Noticing Mu Rulan’s tone grow colder, Mo Qianren was quick to speak out, “They don’t have bad intentions . ”

“Many people do things in good faith, but not everyone is willing to accept their one-sided kindness, ya,” she said, the constant smile on her face disappearing . She didn’t look stern but it was evident that she was very unhappy .

Mo Qianren had nothing to say in response . After staring at her for a few moments, he said lightly, “There won’t be a next time . ” This time he had also been unprepared . He had gone to the bathroom and came back out to realize he was locked in .

“Mm,” after hearing his answer, she smiled again .

She liked to speak with Mo Qianren . Their conversations were neat and simple . There was no need to put up a front with him .

“Is there no way to open the door?” Mu Rulan walked to the door and pulled on the handle . It didn’t budge .

“There are at least two locks outside,” he said, glancing at the french windows behind him . “The glass here is bulletproof . ”

“Eh?” Her eyes widened in surprise . Bulletproof glass? Why? Even in places like Hong Kong that were populated by the underground mafia, she had never seen the Ke Family install any bulletproof windows .

Mo Qianren had stepped into more dangerous paths than Mu Rulan, as was very evident by his demeanor . His expression didn’t change as he said, “This isn’t something that’s too rare . ”

“I think I’m even more curious about Mr . Mo’s line of work . ”

“Curiosity killed the cat . ”

“Hm, indeed,” she nodded .  Translated by The Novelst

There were a few documents inside Mo Qianren’s room, but they were all filed away so naturally Mu Rulan wouldn’t ask to take a look . She also believed Mo Qianren wouldn’t allow her to read through them either .

There were psychological explanations and analysis written on them; if he were to let this psychopath read them and learn it all, how horrible could the outcome be?

And so Mu Rulan could only find things to busy herself with so as to pass the night faster .

Mo Qianren continued reading his documents, hearing the scratch of a pen on paper intermittently throughout the night . But sooner or later the sound came gradually to a stop . Mo Qianren lifted his gaze and was surprised by the scene in front of him .

Mu Rulan had fallen asleep .
