Clyde. Aren't there any legal solutions you can think of off-

hand?"

His wrinkled features pinched tightly together. "Well, I'll

tell you what I do plan to do. I'm going to call my lawyer

right now and ask his opinion about this whole doggone

thing. It just don't seem right."

"But what about the story, Clyde? Do you think it's okay

to run it? I've tried to be honest, but I'm sure it comes across

as accusatory toward TS Development, if not outright hos-

tile."

"You're the editor, Maggie." He grinned slyly. "And like

I've always said, these are your decisions to make. But to my

way of thinking, there's no question about whether you

should run it or not. Folks deserve to know the truth, even

when it's downright stinking and rotten like this dirty bit of Looking for You All My Life41

business. By the way, have you sent Scott Out to get some

photos of Arnold's farm~"

"No, but that's a good idea." She made a note. "One

thing still troubles me, though."

"What's that?"

"Mr. Westerly still doegn't really know what these boys

are up to. I tried to tell him,~ but he just didn't want to hear

it. He doesn't think Greg has anything to do with any of it,

and he sincerely believes Rick will continue to farm his land.

He even plans to keep living in that sweet little house of his."

Clyde frowned. "Well, it's a nasty chore, but you'll have

to set him straight before he reads it in the paper."

"I know." She sighed. "I just hate to see him hurt like

this. He's such a nice old guy."

"If it makes you feel any better, I'm phoning my lawyer

right now."

Maggie called Scott into her office and asked him to go

out to the Westerly farm to take photos.

"What for?"

She thought a moment. "It's for an article. I'll fill you in

on the details later. But why don't you give Mr. Westerly a

call first and see if you can interview him for our Bit ofHis-

tory column while you're out there. He's in his nineties but

just as clear as he can be, and I'm sure he has some good sto-

ries to share. I promised him you'd come out and he's

looking forward to seeing you-he knew your grandfather."

"Sure, I'll see if I can set it up right away."

"And when you see him, please tell him I'll be giving him

a call to talk about this upcoming article too."

Scott's appointment with Mr. Westerly was set for

Tuesday morning, and Maggie decided to wait until the

afternoon to give him a call. But when she tried, there was

no answer; and as it was a sunny day, she figured he must be

Lworking outside. On the following morning as she drove to 42Melody Carlson

work, it occurred to her that today's paper was in the process
