Chapter 7: Light In Despair (1)

Wang Hao placed a cigarette between his lips. His hands trembled during the process. Slowly, he pulled a lighter and lit the cigarette with his head tilted slightly forward towards the fire. His whole entirety seemed to be in a state of extreme false bliss of security.

Ye Ke could feel Wang Hao's psychological mentality slowly draining from fear.

Ye Ke sighed and went back to the balcony once more.

The everlasting sun shone through the ripples of the water and through the boughs of a tree. Far as he knew, there were no monsters lurking in sight—only torn corpses lying deathly still on the ground. The scene solidified in a pool of blood. Were it not for what transpired earlier on, many would believe it was only a warm and quiet afternoon.

Sirens and explosions could be heard from the far distant and sounds of ringing guns echoed throughout the vast world. The armed forces and police department were out. This led him to believe that outside of the campus grounds was much more chaotic. They're trapped here, trapped in this place. If they're to head outside, dangers and chaos surely awaited them and chances of escaping dimmed rightfully so.

What should he do now? Ye Ke doesn't know. He's not sure. In the past, he'd smile indifferently to all problems faced. He had no close relatives living and the reason he's able to live heartlessly without worries was because of the trauma from the past. He lost the people he loved. To experience that all over again… he'd rather not. So he shut himself out and built a wall so high that none could break it.

But now… but now he realized something. He realized he didn't want to die. He realized life had something much more to give him. At least he didn't want to die in such a manner as what he saw mere moments ago. To die a disgusting and painful death… he didn't want that.

Ignoring his friend sitting on the lower bunk bed while smoking to rid himself of the fear and anxiousness filling the core of his body, Ye Ke began scrounging the cupboards, boxes, bed, wardrobes, and places he knew his friend would hide their belongings and food. Ye Ke knew Zhou Kai usually had the most snacks but even so, he could only find at most three packets of instant noodles and two boxes of Oreo cookies, two bags of peanuts, and a pack of wine. Ye Ke frowned. He regretted not reserving food in the house. This'd only last him and his friend two to three days at most.

As for clean drinking water, he remembered Chen Zihan bought a set of water tank on an online store and planned to take them back to his hometown for winter break. The water tank was a much more convenient use in the northern countryside but the use of the water tank was more important now than ever. They had no water and the electricity was cut off. But if he remembered correctly, the city relied on a hydroelectric power station which powered their electricity for a short period of time. Power won't be a problem. But if the city used a thermal power plant, they'll probably lose power before dark.

But what Ye Ke needed the most were weapons. He had no courage to fight these monsters with his bare hands. They looked so ferocious and thinking about it brought cold chills all over his body. He believed he'd be able to face up to them if he had a weapon. Sword or guns, doesn't matter so long as he had a weapon.

Moreover, Zhou Kai and Chen Zihan hadn't come back yet. They're put in such a dangerous situation if they're still outside roaming the campus grounds with those monsters lurking around. But it's also possible that they weren't in the school grounds. It's possible they went outside long before the chaos here began.

"Whatever." Ye Ke sighed and shook his head. Thinking over the matter brought him no benefits. Only headaches.

Ye Ke opened a box of Oreo and sat at the opposite edge of the lower bunk bed where Wang Hao sat.

He's not sure how many people came back to the dormitory safe and sound. There were no sounds to be made outside and he thought they were the only two left in the whole dormitory building.

"Hey, do you want some?"

"I'm not hungry… you eat." Wang Hao shook his head and flicked his cigarette. The ashes fell while his eyes hid a deep sea of sadness.

"You think I really want you to eat? Look, I'm saying that you should cut down on smoking. It's a strategic resource. We only have a few cigarettes left. You can smoke a cigarette in the next two days." Ye Ke's expression was extremely exaggerated like that of a clown.

Wang Hao smiled solemnly. "Isn't it just a few cigarettes? Don't worry. I'll get you some more packs soon." Wang Hao inhaled once more before stubbing out the cigarette.

"Wang Hao, we're going to live." Ye Ke spoke each word slowly.
