Chapter 36: Kneading the dough Thank you for reading this chapter at prosperous food dot com.

Here you go, today's chapters.

"It is him!" Wen Rou was astounded. She could recognise the sound of the flute and the soulful yet lonely melody anywhere. She forgot to put on her winter cloak as she rushed towards to the window.

Outside of the window, there was nothing to see, other than the stars and the moon that seemed to shine especially bright in the cover of darkness.

Wen Rou sighed. In this lifetime, he does not know me. This tune and music are also not created for me.

But, why did he remain in Xianyang? She wanted to avoid him, but why does he seem to appear everywhere she goes?

The next day, Wen Rou wake up especially early and is super happy and bright. Perhaps the events of last night had invigorated her, but she is very cheerful this morning.

"This old man! What happened last night? Why is the kitchen so empty?" Zhou Shi went to the kitchen as usual to prepare breakfast, but to her amazement, there are is nothing there to cook. Even the firewood was missing.

"Mother, what are you looking for? I'll help you!" Wen Rou leaned against the window, and Zhou Shi could see the upper body of her figure.

"Whatever we can use to cook!" Zhou Shi grumbled with a sour face.

"Wife, what are we having for breakfast today? Last night I was up late, and very hungry!" Wen Shouzhen entered the kitchen, and looked around for something to eat.

"Eat the wind! [1]" Zhou Shi grumbled.

"Oh, hehe, I am sorry, I forgot! Rou Er, come with father to get the ingredients. This morning, your father will cook for both of you!" Wen Shouzhen suddenly recalled that he had kept everything last night, and scratched his head in awkwardness. He immediately led Wen Rou out.

"Father, so your secret storeroom is in the cellar." Wen Rou followed her father and entered the cellar. Wen Shouzhen shook his fat body and took out some ingredients, and some firewood as well.

"Do not let your mum knows about this! Today your brother will be coming back from school. Tonight I will cook something delicious for all of you!" Wen Shouzhen reminded Wen Rou. If not for the fact that he needs to take too many ingredients and he could not carry them by himself, he would not allow Wen Rou to discover his secret stash!

"Father, relax! My mouth is sealed. Father, let me see for a bit and discovered what treasures had you hidden here!" Wen Rou peeked into the cellar.

The cellar was filled with jars of wine. There is no need to ask, he must have kept these each time they brew the wine!

No wonder every night her father will giggle as he sneakily entered the cellar. He must be drinking in secret!

"Cough, Cough, you lass!"

In the kitchen, Wen Shouzhen was busy cooking. Wen Rou was standing beside him and watching.

"Rou Er, come out! It is very smoky when he is cooking!" Zhou Shi called out.

"It is all right, mother! I am learning how to cook from father!" Wen Rou continued to stand there and watch her father's hands.

"This girl! She works in the restaurant every day from morning to night and she still works hard to learn cooking at home!" Zhou Shi smiled as she shook her head, and gather the bowls and chopsticks to arrange them on the dining table.

"Father, I did not know you can cook flour products!" Wen Rou noticed that Wen Shouzhen is making a dough and she praised him.

"People in our vocation must continuous learn and experiment to keep our skills sharp." Wen Shouzhen heard the words of praise from his daughter and was very pleased. He took another handful of flour and toss into to the dough.

"Father, let me try!" Wen Rou's fingers got itchy and she wanted to try out for herself instead of watching.

In her past life, she also knows how to create some flour products, and this an opportunity for her to see if her skills have been retained into this life.

"Come, you try!" Wen Shouzhen was very pleased with his daughter's attitude towards learning to cook. She took the initiative to learn at all time, and is not willing to give up an opportunity to learn. This is something he loves about Wen Rou.

Wen Rou took out a basin, and stood beside Wen Shouzhen.

"To knead a dough, you need to watch out for 3 light. Hands, basin and surface!" Wen Shouzhen explained as he placed some flour into Wen Rou's basin. And give her a wire mesh.

"Before you use the flour, use the wire mesh to filter the flour. In this way, the flour is finer, and the taste is better. Then you placed the filtered flour into a heap within your basin, and make a hole in the center of the flour. Next, you should add warm water into the hole, and use the chopsticks to beat the flour and water. Remember, you must beat it continuously in the same direction!" Wen Shouzhen demonstrated as he explained the steps.

Wen Rou nodded her head, and recalled these steps. She was very happy to be able to cook again.

"Once the dough is ready, place it on the board. You must knead the dough. Place both hands on top of the dough, and press down hard. The dough is pushed into a sheet-shape with a smooth surface but with cracks on the edges. Continue to place your palm on the dough and use your palm to push the dough forward. Until the dough is a flat sheet with a smooth surface, there is no crack on the edges. Finally, knead the dough together by hand and join them together." Wen Shouzhen was focused on the task as he explained and demonstrated at the same time.

"Rou Er, look, a good dough appears to be shiny on the surface. It is easily reflected the light on the basin. Even the hands are …." Wen Shouzhen had kneaded a dough and was about to show it to Wen Rou.

When he turned around, he was stunned to see a similar dough that is shiny on the surface in Rou Er's hands. He looked at the basin - it was clean and tidy, and there is no flour on it. Even Wen Rou's hands have no flour on them.

"Father, it is kneaded!" Wen Rou sweetly called out and waved the dough in her hand.

"Oh gosh! You are really a rare talent!" Wen Shouzhen tossed his dough onto the table and grabbed the dough in Wen Rou's hand. He looked around and use his hand to press it, and could not find any fault in it.

If she had not demonstrated her cutting skills, carving skills, and her ability to gather the right amount of ingredients, Wen Shouzhen would not believe that his daughter had just watched one time and immediately mastered the art of kneading the dough.

Today, Wen Shouzhen was stupefied by Wen Rou's talent. He could not resist sharing his glee.

"Wife! Come quickly!" Wen Shouzhen was so shocked that he immediately called out.

"Aiyo! Why are you so noisy even when you cook?" Zhou Shi lifts up her skirt as she entered the kitchen.

"Look at this. This is made by our daughter!" Wen Shouzhen proudly shows off the dough as if it is a treasure.

"Rou Er, this is…." Zhou Shi could not believe it.

"Mother, this is because Father is a good teacher! He explained each step of the process in detail!" Wen Rou smiled as she looked at Wen Shouzhen.

"Wife, our daughter, Rou Er, is a rare talent in cooking! To think that I, Wen Shouzhen, finally have someone to pass down my cooking skills to! Hahahaha!"

"Father, let me cook for us today!" Wen Rou strikes while her father is very happy, and used the opportunity to fulfil a wish of hers.

In her past life, she did not have many chances to cook for her family before they were sentenced to death. She really values her family and had always wanted to cook for them.

"Excellent! Today, after I have stop work, I will teach you how to cook! Hahaha!" Wen Shouzhen was so happy that he could not help laughing. Such a smart and diligent disciple is a treasure that was gifted to him by heaven!

Under the guidance of Wen Shouzhen, Wen Rou cooked some steam buns and made a pot of tasty congee as well.

Zhou Shi had a bowl of congee in one hand, and pick up a steaming hot bun with the other hand.

She took a sip of the congee. It was very tasty and infused with a chicken flavour. The bun was freshly steam and very soft and fluffy.

If not for the fact that she had seen it with her own eyes, she could not believe that these foods were cooked by her 12 years old darling daughter!
