Chapter 3

Ling Xia was clutching his travel backpack while crouching on the corner of the streets. He strokes his grumbling stomach as he watches the people that passes by.

It has been almost four days since he had came to this strange world.

At that time when he woke up, he found himself lost in a Jurassic like era of a forest where there are plants and animals he had never seen or encountered before. He wandered around in that forest for about three days, fighting off dangerous plants and beasts. And even though he managed to get out of there, he’s nearly starving to death.

The passing crowd wore  bizarre set of clothes similar to those online game characters and their hairstyle were also varying in styles. Ling Xia gathered useful information by attentively listening to the conversations of the passing crowd.

Based on the conversation of those people strolling around the marketplace, there aren’t any sort of government in this world, all of them are divided into powerful sects. The place he is currently at belonged to the territory of the sect called Blood Fiend, and Blood Fiend Sect is a part of Dark Arts Sect.

The currency in this world is not gold nor silver. Instead, they convert energy stones into energy coins. Apart from common daily necessities, there are magic herbs, magic beast’s fur, medicinal pills, and magic devices that are being traded in here. Luckily for him, the language and writing here are similar to the ancient china.

The Dark Arts Sect call their supreme ruler, Demon King……

The current Great Demon King took office three years ago, blah blah blah…

Ling Xia discovered that, regardless if its the Righteous Sect or the Dark sect, they both have the same gossips.

Ling Xia was somehow puzzled. Why are these terms seemed so familiar to him? Its as if he had read it once on a novel or something with an incomplete ending….But no matter what the ending is, or what the story is about, he can’t seem to remember anything about it.

Shit, did I transmigrated into a book?

Nowadays its all about transmigration. Transmigrating into a book, transmigrating into a game, transmigrating into the ancient times…..There are loads of other men and women out there that could have transmigrated in his place! Yet he was the one who just had to be chosen?

It’s no wonder that he had those inexplicable abilities, was it because he was bound to be transmigrated?

To become this foreign world’s stallion character(aka harem master), he don’t have the slightest bit of interest for such thing!

Regarding his newly found abilities, the first one is the ability to control plants. He could control the plants to grow in a certain extent and communicate with them —— But the higher the plant’s level, the more energy is being consumed. And according to this world’s cultivation system, his abilities are within the scope of Wood Type Element.

The other one is physical abilities. He can now split a rock open, with just a smash of his fist!

He later developed a sort of bizarre ability, in which as he applied energy in his eyes, he can clearly see things during nighttime. Aside from that amazing ability, he could also maintain a reserve of energy in his body despite being in a state of extreme starvation. Maybe he might have more abilities, but he had yet to discover them all.

There was a delicious scent of barbecue wafting along the road, that Ling Xia mouth waters upon smelling it while avoiding the curious eyes of the passing crowd.

He knows that his travel bag pack, clothes, and hair is out of place, since the people here are carrying a storing pouch, where despite its small size, could carry both their stuff and money.

The stuff inside his travel bag pack are things that he had already prepared before hand. Inside are his razor, towel, and a few change of clothes. But for the money he has, it was clear that there isn’t any place he could exchange it for food in this world.

Ling Xia creases his brow. It goes without saying that he wanted to find a part-time job, but he had a hard time finding an available job in this small town. He sighed in exasperation.

Do I have to catch some wild magic beast back in that forest to sell?

It was difficult for him just to get out of that place, so he was really afraid on going back there and getting lost again. Moreover, he experienced being hunted down by a group of small squirrel like animals as a food, just by talking about it makes him shameful!

He was just looking down and pondering about his next move, when a pair of black boots suddenly appeared right in front of him. Ling Xia raises his head in surprised, and saw a solemn young man staring back at him.

This young man was wearing black all over, and a sword was hanging on his waist. His posture was so straight, it resembled the temperament of a disciplined policeman.

Ling Xia felt anxious, is he being suspected as a spy or something?

That young man opened his mouth, and talked in a polite tone in the contrary: “Your name?”

Ling Xia stared blankly. The names in this world are rather quite strange. There are names that are specially long, and there are names that are very short. Some are westernize, others are very eastern. There are names that doesn’t have surname either….would his name be out of place in here?

He was in constant struggle within his thoughts, until he uttered a reply: “Dao Feng.”

Dao Feng is the name of his magic pet on a game, and he heard someone calling some other person “Senior Brother Da Dao [1]“, so this name shouldn’t sound inconspicuous?

That young man no longer asks him any questions, and just left. Ling Xia felt baffled.

What was that about?

The strange setting of this world is not beneficial to him, but at least, they aren’t ancient-minded people who expels anything that seemed strange. At most, they’re just giving him the curious look.

Ling Xia was once again sitting on the corner of the streets, but soon, a beggar came over to kick him out, saying that it was his turf. He stood up without a fuss and left. He intends to have a go again in trying his luck.

Ling Xia walk over to take a look. As it turns out, the Blood Fiend sect are recruiting manpower for Bai Shou Yuan. In short, they’re recruiting people who could be a zookeeper for a zoo. The pay for such job is five level one energy stones per day with food and accommodations. And when assigned to raise a high level magic beast, that pay is raised to twenty or more. For an average citizen, it is already quite a high pay.

When Ling Xia remembered those ferocious wild magic beasts in the forest, he was somehow struck with fear. But its better to raise magic beasts the size of a big tiger rather than get chase around by them…

He don’t know how to go back in his world as well——And if he did manage to, it’ll be also a disaster, since he had to live in a disguise everyday like superman. He had no other choice but to find an accommodation and a steady job first. Familiarize himself with the surroundings, then make plans.

Ling Xia motivates himself for a moment, urging himself to try his luck. In order for him to fill his stomach, raising those tigers now is the way.

The distance of the Bai Shou Yuan is two hundred Li from here, but the registration area is nearby. Ling Xia goes to the posted announcement, then went to the designated area on the post. Immediately, he unexpectedly received a set of clothes for new hires and two one level energy stones. He was then under the impression that the Blood Fiend Sect was rather quite a generous and easy mannered place.

Ling Xia’s heart jumped in delight. He immediately ran and went to buy himself some porridge and stuffed meat buns, he then ate until he was full.

There are a lot of normal citizens that signed up, and about ten guards managing the registration. Ling Xia and the others wore the uniforms for workers and was taken to the magic beasts after. It was effortless for him, but the others are wheezing as they catches up. Once they passes by three to four more small garrison, the cluttered queue following along gradually lessened. When Ling Xia counted, there were only about thirty or more remaining——It seemed like the scale of this zoo is not small.

And at last, they arrived at the Bai Shou Yuan. The Bai Shou Yuan practically occupied the mountain and spans dozens of Li in circumference, surrounded by wilderness at all sides. Ling Xia looks around the scenery, his heart increasingly sinks for he originally came from a bustling city. But it’s ok, he’ll just have to get a magic beast companion to take him down the mountain valleys.

The lead disciple carefully surveyed the crowd, then pointed at Ling Xia and said: “You, step forward.”

Ling Xia apprehensively walked forward, then that disciple soon pointed to a few more people. Ling Xia just then slowly realized, that he was pick along others based from the fact that they appeared to be physically fit.

Next, the lead disciple quickly distributed a waist plate on them, and shouted to Ling Xia and the others that the yellow waist plate signifies that they are assigned to take care of level three magic beasts. Those with lesser physical strength are given green waist plate and are assigned to level two magic beasts.

Ling Xia followed a senior beast caretaker in. This middle-aged beast caretaker’s appearance looked good-natured, and was called Hong Lin. Ling Xia remembered his own fake name, and it made him snicker when he was called “Xiao Dao [2]“.

At the time of sleeping, he was lying on a plank bed along with thirty guys crammed with him on the same hall. All over the place were sounds of snoring, talking in their sleeps, and various weird odors.

Ling Xia creases his brows while turning and tossing around, unable to fall asleep. Hong Lin said that, only those capable of raising level five magic beast and above are entitled to having their own room assignment. He will definitely strive hard to familiarize himself with the practice of raising magic beasts, then he will request to take care of high level ones as soon as possible.

He and Hong Lin were assigned to level three magic beasts known as “green wing”. They are a beautiful magic beast similar to peacocks. The place they were being raised in was the size of two basket ball courts, with the surrounding and the top side covered with protective nets.

Although Ling Xia likes small furry animals like dogs and cats, he can’t help but be entranced at the look of this bird. While Hong Lin meticulously puts on metal cap on his head and protective garments, he noticed that Ling Xia was distractedly looking around. He knitted his brows and said: “This type of animal is quite dangerous, you better be careful Xiao Dao!”

Hong Ling smiles at him amicably and had his full attention to the younger generation.

Ling Xia was reminded of his experiences in that forest. He nodded his head quick and puts on the same protective gear as Hong Lin. On that forest, he ran across to undoubtedly cute and small animals, and yet, they can swallow prey a lot bigger then them…….

The Green Wing’s food are common grass snakes. Hong Lin mentioned the box containing it, opened the lid, and pours out the snakes inside. Those Green Wing saw the food and started partaking, while letting out a sharp shrill that makes a man nervous from hearing it. Ling Xia’s scalp felt like it was tingling at the site of those snakes moving on the box he was carrying. It was the main fodder for the brooding Green Wing’s birds.

Ling Xia asked: “Hey, what are these birds used for?”

This place is not like a normal zoo, where people pay for entrance tickets and visit the animals being raised.

Hong Lin’s mouth uttered a shush, hinting to Ling Xia to talk later. He moved meticulously, as if he’s cautious of those snakes not falling down on the ground but on himself. Ling Xia quickly breathes quietly, and imitated his method of pouring those snakes out to the brooding Green Wings.

As soon as they got out and closes the entrance, Hong Lin took off the metal cap and said while gasping: “Xiao Dao, next time you go in, you must lower your voice as much as possible. Those Green Wings are gluttonous and aggressive. If you alarm them, the aftermath would be very terrible!”

Ling Xia was frightened by what Hong Lin said and hastily nodded. He apologetically said: “I’m really sorry senior brother Hong. I’m not from this place, so I’m not knowledgeable about these magic beasts.”

“No wonder.” Hong Lin carried the boxes with Ling Xia and they walked back together. On their way, he explained, “The feathers of these Green Wings may not be rare, but they are actually a favorite food of those high level magic beasts.”

Ling Xia suddenly realizes, that they are actually currently raising food for high level magic beasts!

The Green Wings are gluttonous creatures, so they need to be fed four times a day, for three consecutive days. Ling Xia soon became accustomed in handling snakes that the complexion of his face no longer changes.

Sleeping at night and taking a bath was still a major problem. Sometimes, Ling Xia had no choice but to cover his nose with his clothes. If not, the stink wafting around the hall will suffocate him and he’ll be unable to get sleep at all.

Ling Xia couldn’t take it anymore and asked Hong Lin: “Senior brother Hong, how do I apply to take care of the feeding of high level magic beasts?”

Hong Lin look at him and casually replied: “Xiao Dao, you haven’t been here for too long, so why are you thinking about raising high level magic beasts already? It’s better to make do with small pay, so you don’t have to risk it.”

With just little strength won’t get much pay off, and Hong Lin believes the Ling Xia is only an ordinary person.

Ling Xia thought of those magic beast he had fought off bigger than a tiger, so he was more or less confident. He recounted that moment and described that magic beast’s appearance to Hong Lin. During that time in the forest, he was in adrenaline rush, that when that magic beast pounces on him with its claws raised towards him, he lifted its body halfway its attack and slammed it down with forced —— afterwards, because he was so nervous and afraid, he jumped up on top of a tree, and ran away in an instant.

Hong Lin was dumbfounded and his jaw dropped. According to Ling Xia’s description, what he encountered must be the level four magic beast Bao Chong. So this gentle and feeble looking young man is unexpectedly capable of escaping the claws of Bao Chong!

Ling Xia was slightly upset with the way he was being look at, so he quickly explained: “My strength is a bit powerful…..”

Hong Lin seemed like he was somewhat considering and said: “Xiao Dai, you haven’t learned about your body’s innate talent, have you?”

Innate talent? Why does that term seemed familiar to Ling Xia. He shook his head and replied: “I came from a small remote town, and haven’t gotten along with anyone yet, so I haven’t.”

Hong Lin patted his shoulders: “If that’s the case, you should look for the disciples in charge to talk about it, and once you get transferred to take care of high level magic beasts, the pay will be much higher.”

Everyone was calling the leading disciple “Senior Brother Jing “. Ling Xia ate his lunch at noon and looked for him afterwards, he then explained his purpose for coming. Jing Ge observed him, and asks him to lift up a boulder half a man’s height. Ling Xia breathes in for a moment, then lifts up that boulder in one movement. The complexion of his face not changing as he throws it away somewhere far.

Jing Ge nodded his head and praised him: “Right, your aptitude is not bad. Tomorrow you’ll be assigned with Wan Yan to take care of level five Bald Eagles——Go to the store room and get your red waist plate, set of bedding, and have the store room disciple take you to an empty room.”

Ling Xia can’t help but rejoice. He faintly smiled and replied: “Many thanks Senior Brother Jing!”

Even though it was a single room, but it was only a small room about ten square meters in size. Nevertheless, Ling Xia was perfectly contented, and had a good night sleep he seldom have.

Bonbon translation notes:

[1] Da Dao – The translation of this name was ‘Sword’ while Ling Xia’s fake name was ‘Knife’.⏎
