Acknowledgments.

I would like to thank my friend John Watson. He was the first to be amused by my 100 Thing Challenge and instigated all the attention that has followed. This book would not have been written without his first step. I am grateful.

Once others took note of my 100 Thing Challenge, I was not sure what to do. I am indebted to Lisa Sharkey, who recognized a book before I saw one. I am thankful that she talked me into writing it and remained committed to this project, even when it was tough. I would like to thank my editors: Amy Bendell's patience and insight have made this a better story. Special thanks to Ian Jackman. I needed his eye to put everything together. And also I'm glad for Greg Daniel's wisdom.

To my friend Tim Morriss, your one sentence of encouragement did more than all else to make me brave enough to write this book. Thank you.

To all of my friends, acquaintances, and the hundreds of perfect strangers who have called and commented and e-mailed your advice, I give my hearty appreciation. We need each other.

Of course my family is entitled to thanks most of all. I am so in love with my three daughters, who remained carefree and continued to live childlike lives throughout, only occasionally pausing to glance curiously at their father's antics. My dear wife has always been faithful and supportive (though not an enabler) of my crazy ideas. She deserves my thanks. She also has my heart forever.

About the Author.

DAVE BRUNO is an author and advocate for simple living. He's the creator of the 100 Thing Challenge, a project focused on breaking free from the constraints of American-style consumerism. Bruno loves every outdoor square inch of California that he's ever hiked, biked, surfed, or visited. He lives in San Diego with his wife and three daughters. Bruno's favorite of many household pets is his loyal mutt, Piper.

Advance Praise for The 100 Thing Challenge.

"Reading Dave Bruno's book has been both bracing (to think what could be done!), but also a challenge (should I get rid of some or all those books?). Living simply is only an ideal until someone like Bruno gets particular. The way he got particular should make everyone think-hard, which is a very good thing."

-Mark Noll, Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History,

University of Notre Dame.

"In a loving, wise, sometimes hilarious manner, Dave Bruno holds a mirror up to us and says to take a closer look at how we're living. He's no Don Quixote, tilting at imaginary windmills. His concerns and solutions are real and realistic. Reading this will lead you to a better life."

-Dean Nelson, author of God Hides in Plain Sight and director of the journalism program at Point Loma Nazarene University.
