Prologue

Occasionally, I have a dream.

In my dream, I'm holding a sword. I'm fighting a giant Longma without hesitation.

"That's impossible."

Whenever he awoke from his dream, Sung Joon would shake his head. He had talked about the dream before and his friend thought it might be a vision, but even then, Sung Joon shook his head.

However . . .

That day . . .

At that place . . .

When I pulled out that sword, it was no longer a dream.

Chapter 1 - I Was a Sword Master in my Past Life (1)

Sung Joon woke from his dream, took a shower, and left his house. His destination, the Seoul Dungeon Bureau.

"Welcome, Hunter. I am the clerk, Lee Youn Joo. How may I help you?"

"I would like to check the Matching results."

In the Dungeon Bureau, hunters with a similar level of skill were connected through a system called "Matching". Due to his request, Youn Joo's face flickered with irritation.

"Hunter, I apologize, but when the Matching is finished,  we will contact you separately."

"I came because I thought … the Matching might be finished."

"That would not happen. If you were not contacted by us, the Matching should not be ready."

"Could you please check one more time? I've already waited a month."

Youn Joo sighed. Though it was rude to Sung Joon, he was already used to it and held in a bitter smile.

He knew it was useless. Unfortunately, he had little choice.

"I understand. Could you please tell me your name and your rank?"

"Kang Sung Joon. C-Rank, Healer."

"Ah, so you're Kang Sung Joon? That legendary Healer?"

"Ha ha, yes… you are correct."

In response, Sung Joon let out a nervous laugh. The Legend was a nickname he had received from the beginning, when he had awakened as a low C-Rank Healer Hunter.

"That Hunter is the Legend."

"Why is he called the Legend?"

"It's because his Healing Power is legendarily low. Although most healers are at least B-Rank, that guy's C-Rank."

"Ha, what's with him?"

The whispering voices were quite loud. Sung Joon hid his displeasure. Most Healers had a high self-esteem, but because Sung Joon had low Healing Power, that wasn't the case.

Because Healers were rare, he barely received a C-Rank designation, though he was much weaker than a D-Rank hunter.

"One day, I'll definitely succeed."

If he could just achieve his goal, he wouldn't need to worry about other people's opinions.

"I will go and check now. Please wait one moment."

She was obviously annoyed. Sung Joon looked earnestly at Youn Joo but knew the result in an instant. Youn Joo checked on her tablet and soon after, let out a small sigh and shook her head.

"We did not find any matches. It looks like you will have to wait a bit more."

Her face looked like it was saying 'Please stop bothering me and leave'.

"I'll be back."

Sung Joon withheld his bitter feelings and went back home. He raised his smartphone and looked at his bank balance.

[Bank Balance: 45,200 Won]

His 500,000 Won from the F-Rank Dungeon Raid a month ago was nearly spent. He used most of the money on his living expenses and his father's hospital bill and now he only had 45,200 Won to his name.

Tears welled up in his eyes.

Sung Joon's success rate for clearing dungeons was low, so his rating was low. Thus, it wasn't easy for the Dungeon Matching to find a match.

"I'm in trouble."

Sung Joon weakly dropped his smartphone but a familiar bell sound rang out. He raised his smartphone and looked at the screen.

[Dungeon Bureau]

He felt ecstatic and put the phone to his ear.

"H-Hello?"

-Hello, Hunter. This is the Dungeon Bureau. We have matched you with a D-Rank dungeon. There are five people, including you. Will you proceed?

'I will proceed', is what he wanted to say, but a D-Rank dungeon… He had been stuck at the D-Rank dungeon. If a normal C-Rank Hunter joined a party, they could easily clear a dungeon of that difficulty but for someone like him, who had less ability than a D-Rank Hunter, it was quite the scary place.

The fear bubbled up inside him but he thought about his bank balance and finally responded.

"I'll go."

He came one hour early to the location. He was nicknamed the Legend, a humiliating alias he received due to his pathetic Healing Power and because he was even less useful than an E-Rank Combat Hunter. However, he could still make a decent living because he had learned how the weak survived in this world.

"So it's you, Sung Joon? You're early."

A hunter approached, armed with a greatsword. He was someone Sung Joon knew.

"Ah, Mr. Kim Sang Min!"

Kim Sang Min.

He was a D-rank Combat Hunter. Sung Joon had cleared a few dungeons with him, so he knew he was pretty good.

'We should be able to clear the dungeon easily.'

Sung Joon smiled. However, when he saw the next person, Sung Joon hid his sour expression.

"What's this? The Legend's here?" he spoke sarcastically.

He was Jo Deok Soo, a D-Rank Combat Hunter. At his side was a woman that Sung Joon assumed was his girlfriend, as she stuck close to him and acted cute.

"Deok Soo, what's the Legend?"

"Jin Ah, you haven't awakened for very long, so you don't know, huh? It's simply a useless piece of trash, a leech that takes part of our earnings."

"Ah, I see!"

Sang Min heard their exchange and furrowed his eyebrows.

"Those guys…"

Yet, he didn't intervene. That was the extent of their relationship. Sung Joon hid his bitter feelings and Deok Soo walked towards him and spoke.

"I'll give you 100,000 won, so can you just leave?"

Sung Joon bit his lip. He thought he had gotten accustomed to the insults but the words still stung.

Like right now.

"Deok Soo, you're being a bit excessive."

"It was just a joke, haha!"

Sang Min had observed the situation, decided to intervene, and Deok Soo stepped back. Finally, a naive-looking E-Rank Hunter joined them. After being authorized by the Dungeon Bureau, the group entered the dungeon.

"It's a D-Rank dungeon, so everyone stay on your toes!"

Sang Min drew his greatsword. Dungeons were mostly underground. The last person to join, Han Gi Seok, rose his magic lamp and the party proceeded with the dungeon attack.

"They're coming!" Gi Seok cried out urgently. He backed up a few steps and the monsters' red eyes gleamed in the darkness and then they appeared before them.

"Goblins!" Gi Seok yelled.

The battle began immediately. Jin Ah buffed Sang Min and Deok Soo and they stood in front and took care of the goblins. Gi Seok protected Jin Ah and Sung Joon brought up the rear.

"Hoo! Is that all of them?"

Sang Min swung his sword and in one stroke, the blood fell off.

"It looks like the Boss Room." Gi Seok said. There was a colossal stone gate in front of them. They had arrived after going through a few battles.

"Maybe it's because we only killed goblins, but the quality of the magic stones is quite bad. It would be great if the boss drops a good item." Deok Soo complained and walked towards Sung Joon.

He extended his right arm. It looked like it had been pierced by a Goblin's shortsword.

"Heal me."

"Okay, one moment please."

It sounded like an order but Sung Joon hid his true feelings and began the healing. A white light enveloped the wound and slowly started to heal the wound.

"What is this, the healing is way too slow. It's a lot different from the Healers I've seen."

"Jin Ah, he's the Legend. He has the lowest Healing Power."

"Ah, you're right! That's how it was!"

Based on your rating, you would be randomly grouped through Matching and you couldn't pick your party members. If you wanted to pick your party members, you had to apply as a Duo and designate a party you'd like to join.

They must've found something funny, as they laughed heartily. Deok Soo's wound was partly healed and Sung Joon walked towards the stone gate.

There was a single tombstone.

"A shrine for the past life? 'Draw the sword if you are prepared to awaken your past life.'"

He read the inscriptions on the tombstone in a Different World Language. Sang Min curiously approached him.

"You know how to speak the Different World Language?"

"A little."

"Not bad."

Sung Joon laughed bashfully at Sang Min's light compliment.

"Now, let's go!" Deok Soo pressed.

He lightly pressed the mechanism and the stone gates opened. Gi Seok and Sang Min lead and Gi Seok lightened up the room with his magic lamp.

The moment Sung Joon stepped into the stone chamber, the stone gates closed with a heavy sound.

"Deok Soo?"

"Everything's fine, if we take down the boss, they'll open again."

Deok Soo comforted Jin Ah and Sang Min and Gi Seok observed their surroundings. In the center of the room, there was an altar with a sword stuck in it and there was armor lined up on sides of the walls as well as inactive magic lamps.

"Excuse me, those aren't living armors, right?"

"Don't you know that those guys only appear in over B-Rank dungeons?" Sang Min responded. Despite that, Sung Joon couldn't get rid of his uneasiness.

"Isn't this a hidden dungeon? Haha!"

A hidden dungeon appeared in the Boss Room. Even the Dungeon Bureau didn't have much information on them.

In exchange for a special reward, the difficulty increased several fold. In most cases, Matching matched your rating with the Dungeon's difficulty level. Therefore, a Hidden Dungeon tended to be a dangerous trap.

"This won't come out. Would you all like to try?" Gi Seok suggested. His suggestion piqued everyone's interest. Their eyes gleamed with curiosity and they walked towards the altar.

"There aren't any traps. You can touch it."

He confirmed that there were no traps and one by one, they tried to pull out the sword. Sung Joon was last to attempt it and as he approached the altar, a voice rang out.

The stone chamber shook and the magic lamps activated.

-SSS-Rank past life detected. Classification, Sword Saint. Beginning test for awakening.

The voice spread across the room and the armors became Living Armors.

"No way! There're Living Armors in a D-Rank Dungeon?" Gi Seok shouted.

"This, this is a dream! This has gotta be a dream!"

Deok Soo panicked at the appearance of the Living Armors. In the midst of the chaos, only the urge to live remained.

A Living Armor only appeared in over B-Rank Dungeons and it was a powerful monster that could easily rip apart a C-Rank hunter.

"Everyone group up! If you're separated, you'll die!"

"We won't give command to…"

Gi Seok responded but was tackled and couldn't finish his sentence. The Living Armor's iron mace had shattered his head.

They moved slowly, but they were extremely powerful.

"Sung Joon is right! Everyone, group up!"

"No! I wanna live!"

"Deok Soo!"

Deok Soo abandoned Jin Ah and ran. 'I have to live!' 'I have to survive no matter what!' However, there was nowhere to run. He was pierced by the Living Armor's spear.

"Ugh!"

He vomited a handful of blood and around three or four Living Armors approached him with their swords and spears and ruthlessly stabbed him.

"Guah!"

"D-Deok Soo!"

With a gruesome shriek, Deok Soo died.

"For now, let's group up." Sang Min said. He watched the Living Armors approach and felt intensely anxious.

Despite the urgency, Sung Joon calmly cleared his head. He remembered the inscription on the tombstone.

'Draw the sword if you are prepared to awaken your past life.'

"It said to draw the sword."

Sung Joon unknowingly spoke to himself. Everyone else had tried to pull out the sword but Sung Joon hadn't. He hadn't tried to pull out the sword yet.

'I'll pull out the sword!'

However, due to the sudden chaos, the altar was a bit far,  whereas the living armors were getting closer.

"Ha!"

Sang Min's greatsword hit the Living Armor's helmet. Living Armor monsters were slow so hitting them wasn't difficult.

However, Sang Min's greatsword didn't even leave a scratch on the Living Armor's helmet.

"Shit!" Sang Min cursed. Sung Joon pulled out the shortsword he kept on himself for self-defense and spoke.

"Ms. Jin Ah! Please buff me!"

"Who are you to order me around! Everyone get lost! Fucking get lost!"

Sung Joon's eyes became cold. It looked like Jin Ah broke due to fear. All this time, Deok Soo had protected her and she had lived easily so she wasn't accustomed to this kind of situation.

"Everyone get lost!"

Jin Ah's horrible shriek rang out across the wide stone chamber. He couldn't expect any help from her. Sung Joon ran towards the altar alone.

Living Armors may be slow but that was only when compared to other monsters. Sung Joon was hit by one of their attacks and his body became bloody.

"Ugh!"

Not much later, Sang Min collapsed. His body was pierced to shreds but he had finally reached the altar.

Meanwhile, Jin Ah was surrounded by the Living Armors.

"Please!"

Sung Joon's bloodstained hand stretched out and grabbed the sword. Even when the others tried to pull the sword, it didn't so much as quiver, but when he pulled it, the sword came out.
