Chapter 40 A New Alliance
Xie Yuqing took a deep breath and said, “So, let’s work together and defeat this monster.”
“Hmm … wait what, when did I agree to work with you guys?” Ye Shaoyang rolled his eyes, as he recalled that the police department had paid Old Guo 70 thousand for killing one white-haired undead. He wanted to make a quick buck too, so he quickly asked, “So, what benefits do I get for working with the police?”
“Benefits … ” Xie Yuqing thought for a second and said, “We’ll give you a certificate for being a good citizen. If you die in the process, you’ll become a brave martyr.”
“Pah! Who wants to be a martyr!” Ye Shaoyang replied angrily, “That’s it?”
“That’s all there is,” Xie Yuqing said, “Isn’t a certificate good enough?”
“Only a certificate? Forget it then,” Ye Shaoyang felt greatly disappointed, as he had hoped that he could take this opportunity to make some money and change his lifestyle. In contrast, what was a certificate good for?
“You can say no,” Xie Yuqing smiled and placed her handcuffs on the table. Then, she cleared her throat and said, “We saw you enter the building the night before Liao Qingqing was killed. We suspect you have something to do with it, so I’ll have to bring you in for questioning.”
Her words stunned Ye Shaoyang, and he said, “You’re blackmailing me? You were with me that night!”
“Who knew if you went back again and if you were there to set a trap, right? Oh, you said you were there hunting for spirits? How dare you use superstition as an excuse; you’re in deep trouble now young man,” Xie Yuqing raised an eyebrow and looked at him smugly.
Ye Shaoyang shook his head in disbelief, “ Yin Susu was right, the more pretty the lady, the more lies she will tell.”
“Who is Yin Susu?” Xie Yuqing asked.
“She is Zhang Wuji’s mother. Haven’t you read the novel ‘The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber’ by Jin Yong before? How outdated are you, even I’ve read it when I was up on Maoshan Mountain,” her question surprised Ye Shaoyang. His answer dumbfounded Xie Yuqing in return. How could someone that was still using a brick phone call others outdated?
“So, do you want to be a criminal or a good citizen, pick your fancy,” she asked.
Ye Shaoyang shrugged his shoulders and replied, “Do I have a choice?”
Xie Yuqing smiled joyfully when she heard him surrender.
“That reminds me. How could you be thinking about the benefits when you haven’t even defeated her? Are you confident?”
“Nope,” Ye Shaoyang placed both hands on the back of his head and slouched in the chair. He was not confident at all about facing a supreme spirit, a spooky boy doll, and the thousands of spirits and specters that lived in the spirit nest. “But I have no reason to give myself more pressure,” Ye Shaoyang explained. This young man rather impressed Xie Yuqing, even though he seemed like a carefree child, he was someone that took action.
Suddenly, Ye Shaoyang thought of something and asked, “By the way, what’s your rank anyways? Since you're able to call the shots.”
Xie Yuqing replied proudly, “ Vice deputy of the criminal investigation team, and the team leader for this special case.”
“How are you able to climb to such a high position?” Ye Shaoyang said in shock. Then, he looked at her body and her beautiful face. He realized something, “Oh I think I know how you got there.”
“What are you saying?” Xie Yuqing stared at him and explained, “I worked hard and got a big drug bust, and that's how I got promoted.”
“Let's talk about some important matters, like what are you going to about the spirit nest, and what can we help you with?” Xie Yuqing asked.
“I'll be going back to dormitory four to locate the seal’s position. You can help me by finding all the available information about dormitory four. Especially the history of that female spirit that we met. Understanding how she died might help us find her weakness,” Ye Shaoyang said. Xie Yuqing nodded and said, “I’ll probably have to contact the school for some of this information. Why don’t you save my number, so that you can call me if you need anything.” Ye Shaoyang took out his outdated phone and keyed in her number. Then, he said, “Don’t worry, I won’t hesitate.”
Just as he was about to put his phone back, it rang. He took it out again and saw that it was Zhou Jingru. The news that she had heard worried her, so Zhou Jingru asked him for some confirmation. Ye Shaoyang did not say much, and he told her that it was still under investigation. He said that he would let her know once there were results. Then, Zhou Jinru said, “I know that you’re a very capable person, but please be careful. If you need my help, just call me.”
Ye Shaoyang thanked her and ended the call. Xie Yuqing overheard their conversation and was rather pissed about it, so she complained, “It’s best that only a few people know about this matter.”
“She’s my friend,” Ye Shaoyang said, “She knows who I am, so it’s okay.”
“A she?” asked Xie Yuqing. This statement surprised her.
“Yeah, a very pretty lady,” Ye Shaoyang said proudly.
“Wow, a girlfriend?” Xie Yuqing asked, “How could a hillbilly like you get a girl? Tell me, in which village did you find her?”
Ye Shaoyang chuckled and said, “What if I told you that she is the daughter of the CEO of Star City Corp; would you believe it?”
Everyone knew of this big company, and Xie Yuqing was no exception.
As such, she laughed out hysterically and said, “Let me bring you for a blood test. You must have taken some drugs to have such an elaborate delusion.”
After they finished their discussion, they went their separate ways. Xie Yuqing drove back, while Ye Shaoyang took the shortest path back to his school. When he returned, he saw Li Duo and a stranger that was sitting on his bed. “Brother Shaoyang, you’re back,” Li Duo stood up and politely introduced the stranger, “Let me make an introduction, this is Liao Qingqing’s boyfriend, Hu Shuai.” This fellow was tall and muscular and had a very dark tan. He dressed well and seemed like a rich boy.
“Nice to meet you, you’re a sorcerer?” Hu Shuai politely approached him, but he still had some doubts about Ye Shaoyang’s capabilities. Then, Ye Shaoyang asked, “If you’re Liao Qingqing’s boyfriend, why aren’t you at her funeral?”
“Because I want to see her for one last time,” Hu Shuai tried to hold back his emotions. He took a deep breath and continued, “Since everyone has a soul, I was wondering if I could see her.” This idea surprised Ye Shaoyang, as he did not think of this earlier. He thought to himself, That’s right, her soul must still be in the mortal realm, since she has only died recently. If I could bring her soul here, I could ask her who murdered her.
He immediately nodded and agreed to help Hu Shuai.
“But I do not want to see her possessing someone’s body. I want to see her real self. Tell me a price and do what you have to do,” Hu Shuai said.
Ye Shaoyang smiled and asked, “You’ve got a lot of money?”
“Don’t you want money for these kinds of rituals?” Hu Shuai asked.
“In that case, give me 10 thousand first,” Ye Shaoyang did not hesitate at all.
A slight hint of disappointment appeared in his eyes, as he looked at Ye Shaoyang. However, he just smiled and did not say anything. In desperation, Hu Shuai had no choice but to agree to Ye Shaoyang’s terms. Then, Ye Shaoyang asked, “Do you have anything that belonged to her with you?”
This request left Hu Shuai taken aback, and he searched through his bag and found a cell phone. Then, he said, “This is her cell phone that I wanted to keep as a memento of remembrance. Will this work?”
“Sure,” Ye Shaoyang said. All items that contained remnant Yang Qi of a recently deceased were usable.
