Chapter 37         Spooky Doll

“Even though the Yin Qi is not as strong during the day, we still have to be careful. If something happens, you will have to follow everything I say. Do you understand?” Ye Shaoyang reminded Xie Yuqing, as they entered dormitory four. “Okay,” Xie Yuqing replied unhappily. Then, she nervously pulled out her gun and raised it up, pointing toward the ceiling.

“What are you doing?” Ye Shaoyang asked, as he stopped and looked at her, “You think that can kill spirits?”

“What else can I use? If I don’t have anything, I’ll feel very insecure,” Xie Yuqing complained. She felt wronged.  Ye Shaoyang thought for a while and took out a consecrated peach wood sword. Then, he handed it to her and said, “If you see anything, just strike it with this.”

“I hope I don’t have to use it,” Xie Yuqing mumbled.

Ye Shaoyang grasped a date wood sword and walked in front. Meanwhile, Xie Yuqing closely followed him with a torchlight. Without any stops or delays, the pair headed straight to the fourth floor. When they arrived on the floor, they noticed that the door of room 404 was closed, and it was dead silent. Xie Yuqing recalled the terrifying experience that had occurred the previous night. She swallowed her saliva and asked in a pleading tone, “Why don’t you go in first?”  Ye Shaoyang smiled at her and pushed open the door. Then, he walked into the room.

The room was empty; there was not a soul around.

Like the previous night, Ye Shaoyang took out his eight-trigram mirror and rested it on the doorframe. This action prevented any specters from entering the room. Xie Yuqing felt relieved and walked into the room. She took out her camera and started to take photos of the area. She used her flashlight and inspected the footprints left on the thick layer of dust. After she investigated for a while, she concluded, “I can only find Liao Qingqing’s footprints and the footprints you and I left last night.”

“No sh*t. The murderer wasn’t human, so how could it have left footprints?” Ye Shaoyang said.

Next, Xie Yuqing walked to the window and checked it with her flashlight. There was a nail that stuck out from the frame, and there was a piece of pink cloth hooked onto it. She took some photos of it and proceeded to remove it from the nail. She examined it and said, “This came from Laio Qingqing’s dress. This is an indication that she jumped from this window.”

Then, Ye Shaoyang retorted, “Can you cut the crap. If she didn’t jump off from here, why would you even be here?”

Xie Yuqing gave him a stare and said, “This is procedure!”

Ye Shaoyang laughed and scoffed, “What procedure. Don’t take me for a fool; the proper procedure would need at least two officers at the scene. Also, when you picked up the piece of cloth, you didn’t even have gloves on.”

Xie Yuqing sighed and replied, “To tell you the truth, the police department already knew it was something supernatural when they saw the video footage from the cameras. The videos showed Liao Qingqing flying into the second floor window, and no one else had entered. A few hours later, she jumped and became a dried corpse. I’m only here to go through the formalities. To really solve this case, we can’t just use traditional investigatory methods.”

Ye Shaoyang asked, “You guys have non-traditional methods too?”

“There is a consultant in our department. They say that he is pretty good, but since I don’t believe in ghosts, I’ve never dealt with that guy.”

This slightly surprised Ye Shaoyang and he asked, “Are you talking about Old Guo?”

Xie Yuqing thought for a second and replied, “I don’t know his surname, but I’ve heard he’s in the funeral business. Do you know this person?”

“He is my senior brother,” Ye Shaoyang answered. It seems like Old Guo is making a pretty good living, becoming a consultant of the police department.

“Oh, he is your senior brother?” Xie Yuqing laughed and said, “If I had known about this, I wouldn’t have asked you to come.”

Ye Shaoyang shrugged his shoulders and said, “Ask him then, see if he dares to come into this place.”

Xie Yuqing laughed sarcastically and said, “Stop bluffing. If he is not more powerful than you, why is he your senior?”

“Maoshan Sect has inner and outer disciples. My senior brother is an outer disciple, while I’m an inner one. There are many outer disciples, but I’m the only inner disciple of Maoshan Sect,” Ye Shaoyang looked at her proudly; he conveniently left out his other senior brother, Dao Feng.

As Xie Yuqing busied herself with taking pictures, Ye Shaoyang was also doing some investigation of his own. He noticed that there was no spirit Qi or evil Qi. This puzzled him greatly. Is this not the crime scene? Did she come to this room after someone else killed her? That was not possible. As such, there was only one explanation left—a very powerful specter that could conceal its evil Qi and not leave any traces. If that was the case, it could be very troubling for Ye Shaoyang.

“I’m done here, little trickster. Let’s go,” Xie Yuqing said happily. Then, she tapped his shoulder, “This sister will bring you to have some big meat buns.”

“Call me a trickster again, and I’ll really eat your big meat buns,” Ye Shaoyang said with annoyance.

“You little!” Xie Yuqing tried to give him quick kick, but Ye Shaoyang dodged it.

Right at that moment, a small head peeped into the room through the door. Xie Yuqing screamed in fear and quickly hid behind Ye Shaoyang. Upon closer examination, they saw that it was a boy around four to five years old. He walked slowly and hesitantly entered the room. He was chubby and was wearing a little red stomacher. He had two large, lifeless eyes and a small mouth. “That’s a …. ” This sight stunned Xie Yuqing. How could a kid have wandered into this abandoned building? She held Ye Shaoyang’s arm tightly, as she mumbled, “Where did this kid come from? Is he a ghost or a human?”

“Be quiet!”

Ye Shaoyang was unable to sense any human Qi from the kid that stood in front of them. He began to panic. He’s definitely not human, but if he was a spirit, demon, or specter, how did he just wander into the room and not trigger the eight-trigram mirror? That is not possible unless he has more than a thousand years of cultivation. Ye Shaoyang felt that it was impossible to randomly encounter a thousand year old supreme spirit.

The boy did not seem hostile, and he stopped in front of Xie Yuqing. He looked at her curiously. Then, he reached out to grab her hand and said with a sweet and naive voice, “Come play with me big sister.”

Xie Yuqing feared for her life, so she cried and pleaded to Ye Shaoyang, “What … what am I suppose to do?”

“Big sister, come, I have something that I want to show you …. ” Unable to resist the pull from the boy, he forcefully dragged Xie Yuqing along with him. When he saw this, Ye Shaoyang quickly rushed forward to block the boy and asked, “Why don’t I come play with you instead?”

The little boy slowly raised his head and looked at Ye Shaoyang; his eyes suddenly glowed red. Then, with a deep and haunting voice, he replied, “Move aside!”

“But I really want to play with you,” Ye Shaoyang said, as he abruptly reached out to strike the boy’s right shoulder. Before the boy even walked close to them, Ye Shaoyang had already prepared for the worse, so he had already cut his finger to draw a Yin Yang symbol on his palm. This strike would probably have killed a common spirit or demon. However, this palm only pushed the little boy back. This strike had forced the little boy to let go fo Xie Yuqing. Then, the boy held onto the region that Ye Shaoyang had struck and started to cry. But the cries quickly turned into strange laughs. The two of them became horrified when they saw a visible rate of necrosis that started from his wounded areas. Soon, a large area of bloody flesh was revealed.

“My god … ” Xie Yuqing mumbled, as she sat on the floor.

The boy continued to reveal its gruesome form directly before them. His skin had all rotted away, while his flesh had become an extensive mess. Not satisfied with his appearance, the boy vigorously shook his head. Then, with the sounds of bones cracking, the top of his head fractured into pieces and revealed some of the internal white matter. It did not look like brains. Ye Shaoyang carefully observed it and saw that it was … cotton?
