Chapter 144                Junior Brother

“Do you not remember me? I’m Xu Yajuan,” the girl came closer to Ye Shaoyang and continued. “Back at the old village head’s place, my mother and I helped Sister Fang to deliver her baby and an undead child…”

Ye Shaoyang smacked his head and said, “Oh yeah, now I remember. How’s your mother I think she was scared pretty badly.”

“She’s fine. So what brings you here?”

“I--”

Xu Yajuan did not wait for his answer, “Hunting spirits again?” then she frowned and continued, “Hmmm, now that I think about it, there have been some supernatural events that have made everyone in the hospital uneasy lately.”

Ye Shaoyang and Xie Yuqing looked at each other briefly and he asked, “So what happened?”

“Umm,” Xu Yajuan looked left and right and replied in a soft voice, “Our director doesn’t want us to talk about this in public. If you really want to investigate, you can come find me privately.”

“Oh yeah, almost forgot to ask: do you work here?” Ye Shaoyang asked curiously.

“A nurse intern in the obstetric department. Oh, I need to go now. See you,” she then rushed to the hospital.

Ye Shaoyang watched her as she ran off, he chuckled and said, “That girl is pretty interesting.”

Xie Yuqing’s lips twitched and she said, “I think you’re focusing on the wrong thing. She said there is something off about this hospital. Do you think it has something to do with the Five Spirit Moving Mountain Formation you mentioned?”

“Very likely. Come on, then. Let’s go meet the director.”

When they arrived on the administrative floor, they followed the signs until they found the director’s office.

When they entered, they met a forty-year-old man named Zheng Xiaofei. He seemed refined and studious due to his glasses. Ye Shaoyang noticed that the moire pattern was engraved on the frames of his glasses. Early sorcerers believed that the pattern would repel evil, and only an older generation of sorcerers would have such a habit now.

Xie Yuqing took out her badge as soon as she arrived. Zheng Xiaofei looked at it and said in a respectful manner, “So, it’s Officer Xie! What brings you here today? And he is…?”

“He is our consultant, Mr. Ye,” Xie Yuqing said, “We’re here because there have been reports that some strange incidents have occurred. Could you explain the situation?”

Xie Yuqing impressed Ye Shaoyang. Even if she didn’t know anything, she had set up the question as bait to get more information.

As expected, Zheng Xiaofei’s expression changed. He sighed and said, “You must be talking about the recent medical accident. Did the family members report the case?”

Xie Yuqing was slightly taken aback. Her bait seemed to have lured out info about another case. Before she could reply, the director continued to explain, “If you guys really want to investigate, I will give you my full cooperation, but I personally think this case is completely out of the ordinary and you guys might not be able to solve it.”

“Oh? What do you mean?”

“Erm,” the director looked at them hesitantly and said, “There are some things that I cannot tell you here professionally, I mean.”

Xie Yuqing immediately knew something was up, “Director Zheng, this is nothing official. You can just tell us whatever you know as we are conducting our own investigation.”

The director felt slightly relieved when he heard this. He lowered his head and said in a soft voice, “You two might not believe what I am about to tell you, but I believe our hospital is haunted.”

Xie Yuqing and Ye Shaoyang looked at each other and smiled. The moment was quickly interrupted by the director’s laughter as he shrugged his shoulders and said, “But I am just saying. I’ll definitely give you my full cooperation if you decide to investigate.”

His words seemed to have a hint of distrust as if he didn’t believe these two amateurs could really do anything.

Ye Shaoyang wanted to test him, so he asked, “Director Zheng, as a man of science, do you believe in spirits and gods?”

The director laughed and said, “Well, somethings can’t be explained by science.”

Xie Yuqing then pointed at Ye Shaoyang and said, “Director Zhang, I’ll tell you the truth. Mr. Ye here is actually our consultant on supernatural cases. We knew something strange had happened in this hospital. That’s why I brought him.”

The director was slightly shocked, he examined Ye Shaoyang from head to toe and asked, “Who are you, Mr. Ye?”

“I’m a Maoshan Sect Daoist.”

The director burst into laughter, “I’m really sorry, Mr. Ye. To be honest, I’m a pretty straightforward person. If you had told me that you were from some other Sect, I would have believed you. But the Maoshan Sect? From what I’ve heard they haven’t had disciples for a long time now, plus you’re so young.”

Ye Shaoyang knew the director thought he was a conman. It wasn’t his fault though. The Maoshan Sect’s name was famous, and many conmen used their name in vain. Since the director knew the fact that Maoshan Sect hasn’t taken in many disciples, Ye Shaoyang figured he must have some background, “How do you know about matters of the Maoshan Sect?”

The director smiled lightly and said, “Well, I’m lucky to have studied a few years of Daoism at the Longhu Sect. That’s why I know that Longhu Sect and Maoshan Sect have a good relationship. One of the north and the other south. Come to think of it, we might be fellow disciples,” he finished with a slight hint of sarcasm.

Ye Shaoyang nodded and said, “I see. A fellow Daoist maybe, but not fellow disciples.”

The director laughed and said, “Are you saying you’re not a disciple of Maoshan Sect then?”

Ye Shaoyang shook his head and explained, “You’re mistaken. What I’m saying is that the master of the Longhu Sect, Zhangshuo, is younger than the master of Maoshan Sect by two generations. That means your master would need to call me his senior brother. Since you’re his disciple, what does that mean you should call me?”

The Director became serious, “Preposterous. Indeed, my master Zhangshuo is way younger than master Qing Yunzi, but even master Guo doesn’t dare to call himself a senior brother of master Zhangshuo. If we really wanted to follow the order of generations, then we can only talk about the inner disciples of each Sect. That means the only disciple of master Qing Yuzi, master Ye…”

Ye Shaoyang looked at him and asked, “You said which master?”

“The Heavenly Master of Maoshan Sect, master Ye, who recently went to Stone City--”

“Which master?” Ye Shaoyang asked again.

“Master Ye,” the director paused as though something had struck him. His eyes widened and he asked, “You are also Ye?”

Xie Yuqing felt that it was enough, so she said, “Haven’t I already told you he is Mr. Ye. He is the Heavenly Master Ye you are talking about.”

The director became stiff as a statue, his face paled and he immediately bowed and said, “Heavenly Master Ye, grandmaster, I…”

Realizing what he had done, he was terrified to say anything more.

Ye Shaoyang waved his hand, “It’s fine. You didn’t know who I was. Don’t think too much about it. We’re still fellow Daoist.”

The director felt utmost respect for Ye Shaoyang. A Heavenly Master was indeed different, but the director felt even more pressured and shamed because Ye Shaoyang did not even get angry.

Then Ye Shaoyang asked, “Director Zheng, how did you find out I went to Stone City?”

The director replied, “Grandmaster Ye--”

Ye Shaoyang shook his hand in protest, “Please don’t call me that, people will think we’re weirdos. Just call me Little Ye.”
