Chapter 14 Being Robbed
“Actually, time is far from enough,” Zhou Qingfeng looked at the clock on the wall and sighed silently. It was 12pm, on the 2nd of August 2030. There was less than sixty hours to the the cataclysm.
In the meantime, Katrina started to prepare lunch. She took a can of green beans, condensed milk, jam, and bread out of the cabinet in the kitchen. Zhou Qingfeng was surprised when he saw the food and he said, “Only these for lunch?”
“What else do you want to eat?” Katrina sat on the dinner table and spread the jam on the wholemeal bread. While spreading, she said, “If you’ve eaten lizards, snakes, or mice to survive, you would think this food is delicious.”
It was indeed very difficult to communicate with a mercenary who survived the tough conditions of war. Zhou Qingfeng could only talk to himself, A pizza would be much better than this! He scooped a spoon of green beans and started eating,
Oh God! I have a Chinese stomach! I come from a country of foodaholics! Canned food and bread everyday for three months? There wouldn’t even need to be a nuclear bomb to destroy human civilization, I would die from depression!
Before lunch, Katrina finally accepted Zhou Qingfeng’s request. She bought the large amount of resources he needed from the supermarket online. Those resources would be directly delivered by an unmanned, delivery vehicle in the evening. They were all going to be stored in the storeroom in Katrina’s basement.
However, Zhou Qingfeng did not feel relieved about resources because there was still a lack of fresh meat and vegetables. They would need a special refrigerator to be stored. Otherwise, they would rot very quickly. That means that once the cataclysm happened, Zhou Qingfeng would have to eat canned food every day.
“God damn it!”
Zhou Qingfeng thought of the way the American army ate canned SPAM every day in the war, he could imagine that his life in the future would not be any better. “I must think of a way to solve it!”
As Katrina saw Zhou Qingfeng frowned, she took the initiative to ask, “Hey! Why are there women’s sanitary pads in your shopping list?”
“What? Pads…..” Zhou Qingfeng could not say they were prepared for girls like Angie. There was also a huge amount. “Did I…. buy them? It could be ordered by accident. Just refund them when they arrive.”
He knew that quality of life would fall dramatically, especially during winter. People would burn anything that was flammable to keep warm. By then, a lot of common things in life would be in critical shortage and very rare.
“Hmph….” Katrina obviously did not believe Zhou Qingfeng. She whispered the word ‘pervert’ and thought that Zhou Qingfeng was probably a weirdo with a weird habit.
The payment of the resources was done online. Zhou Qingfeng left fifty-seven dollars, in cash, on the dining table and considered it as his payment to Katrina.
When Zhou Qingfeng thought about how the notes would turn into a stack of wastepaper, he could not help but say, “Katrina, you better spend all of the cash within these two days.”
“Why?” Katrina ate very quickly. She was already done with her lunch when Zhou Qingfeng just started to speak. She grabbed the plate and sent it to the kitchen.
“I thought your reserve for resources wasn’t enough. It just doesn’t meet the principle of ‘mad survivor’,” Zhou Qingfeng could only think of this excuse.
There were many ‘mad survivors’ in America. They worried all the time that they could not survive should disaster happen. During the last century, the nuclear war in the sixties and the seventies left the world traumatized. Many Americans created their own shelters in their backyard, reserved food and resources to get through the winter.
“I’m not a ‘mad survivor’,” Katrina denied. However, she was a little concerned with his words and said, “Maybe, I should supplement some of the weapons and ammos. Recently, I’ve been using a lot of ammos for training.”
“Buying ammo is a good choice as well,” he agreed. Zhou Qingfeng thought that as long as they spent all the money before 6pm on the 4th of August, it would be fine. He added, “Actually you could buy more weapons, they are more valuable.”
Katrina could not deny that. She finished her lunch, quickly cleaned the table, and said, “Follow me, the supermarket nearby has the ammo I need.”
Zhou Qingfeng was very unsatisfied with lunch, he was thinking that it would be great to get McDonalds or Subway. They were definitely better than eating green beans. Before he left, he put dozens of small change into his pocket. He hesitated to bring the pistol.
Colt M1911A1 was big and heavy. It would be a burden as he does not even know how to use it. He saw that the well-equipped Katrina was going to bring at least three pistols with her. So, he decided to bring the pistol with him.
“You’ll need a suitable holster, otherwise, you’ll look like an idiot,” Katrina said sarcastically when she saw Zhou Qingfeng stupidly put the M1911A1 on his belt. She was putting a USP pistol into a holster at her waist. It was convenient to carry and use.
“Could you borrow me a holster?” Zhou Qingfeng was indeed a rookie.
Katrina rolled her eyes and said, “Actually I was going to tell you that it’s better not to take that pistol with you. It would be useless for a rookie like you. I, on the other hand, can kill a hundred people easily by myself.”
What a mean woman, can’t you talk nicely?
Zhou Qingfeng took the pistol out because a pistol on a belt was indeed, very stupid. Only an African uncle with the combat power of less than five would do that.
Katrina drove a Land Rover out of the garage in her basement. The strong, powerful electric driver was the reason that the car was stable, quiet, and powerful at the same time. After passing a few streets, they arrived at Target shopping centre.
It was a little troublesome to buy a gun. You would have to submit an application and be investigated. However, it was much easier to buy ammo, any supermarket would have it. Katrina could actually buy them online, but she had been home the whole morning. Therefore, she decided to come out.
When they arrived at the carpark of Target, Katrina was going to buy ammo when the hungry Zhou Qingfeng saw a McDonalds not far away. He said to Katrina, “I’m going to get some food,” and walked away.
When he arrived at the door of McDonald's, he realized that it was very different from the fast food restaurants in China. There were no wide and spacious counters, no clean and tidy seats, and no sweet and lovely waitresses. There were only two bulletproof windows with iron fencing.
There was a window to pay money and another for food to come out - it was simple and easy. It was the first time Zhou Qingfeng saw this kind of McDonald’s. Could this be a feature of McDonald's in New York?
“Hey, young man, what do you want?” There was a fat, white lady sitting behind the cashier window, and her service was terrible.
“A Big Mac meal,” Zhou Qingfeng said and paid through the cashier window. Very soon, the food came out from the other window. While he was eating, someone approached him from behind and said, “Hey kid, mind giving me some money?”
What the fuck! Zhou Qingfeng shuddered as he slightly turned his head around. He then saw a black guy pointed a gun at him. A ferocious aura can be felt when looking at his suntanned face.
Fuck me, in terms of safety, Brooklyn was indeed the worst in New York. There were criminals and ruffians everywhere. How am I being robbed in broad daylight while eating a burger?!
Is there justice? Is there law? The point is, this wasn’t in my plan!
