He would normally not take even a second look at a woman like Pei Ge, but this one gave him a refreshing feeling.
“Yo, how long do you guys plan to stand at the entrance? My consultation fee is very pricey.”
Joe sucked the juice on his fingers as he generously hurled praises. “It’s really delicious; what a pity that mortals like you don’t appreciate it.”
“Regardless of how pricey your consultation fee is, I can still afford it. If you hadn’t been so adamant on keeping this hospital, I’d have bought it long ago. You’d be speaking to your boss today if I did.”
Ji Ziming let go of Pei Ge as he looked at the doctor with a raised brow. His charisma became very evident at this moment. The nurse, meanwhile, had tactfully left after escorting them to this doctor’s office.
In this hospital, the primary task of the nurses was to escort patients to their attending doctors. If they brought the wrong people, not only the hospital, even some ill-tempered doctors would punish them.
Joe was one of those doctors with the best temper, but he was also one of the most baffling ones. Nobody knew that an upbeat boy like him was actually the owner of this hospital. Meanwhile, the all-powerful Ji Ziming had actually bought a box of exceptionally spicy duck necks for him.
“The old man has just handed over this hospital, yet you wanted to take it from me; how could I agree to it? If I did, he would probably rise from the ground just to scold me. I’d likely die and accompany him down there, too.”
Joe acted nonchalant. Back then, if he had not stopped this man from buying this hospital, his old man would have passed away and not have dragged on for two years.
“Cure my son and I won’t stop you even if you want to die.”
The man’s aloof voice sounded regal in the spacious office.
“Dr. Joe, hello; I’m called Pei Ge.”
Pei Ge stepped forward and greeted him politely, whereas Ji Ziming, who was standing behind her, looked at the doctor with a hint of viciousness in his eyes.
“Sister-in-law, hello; I’ve long known about you, so there’s no need for an introduction.”
Joe purposely ignored the man’s gaze and laughed. “Talk about your son’s condition; I haven’t encountered a similar illness in the past.”
She was impressed that, while this doctor behaved frivolously, he was actually using such an expensive handkerchief to clean the grease on his hands. That handkerchief, which was made for the royalty, had symbols on it.
It was obvious that the doctor enjoyed high status.
“Right; when will you give me those two boxes of duck necks that you promised?”
Joe was most uptight about duck necks. He was different from the other man in that, as long as there were duck necks, he could abandon everything. Ji Ziming realized this ten years ago but did not expect that, even now, Joe would still be the same.
“You want to eat? Cure my son’s illness first, and I’ll let have you everything you want.”
A normal person usually had a bottom line, but the doctor was no normal person.
“No, no, no! I can never get enough of duck necks.”
Joe’s eyes shone; he was not one who could reject all others for one woman.
“Sure. I can give you that.”
As Ji Ziming remained composed, the seated doctor took a deep breath. “Then, I want double.”
“No problem.”
His eyes narrowed as his voice deepened. “Let’s talk about my son’s condition now.”
“Alright. Then, madam, please talk about your son’s symptoms.”
The doctor immediately switched back to work mode as he fixed his collar; his earlier frivolousness was all but gone.
Pei Ge could not help exclaiming inside how birds of the same feather flocked together. In the carpark, she had already experienced the speed at which Ji Ziming changed his mood, and this doctor was just like the man. She did not truly notice that the guy was wearing his white uniform under his coat.
Joe frowned when he did not hear the woman’s answer and looked perplexedly at her.
“Yo, Ji Ziming, why don’t you say it, instead?”
Ji Ziming walked forward and pulled the chair beside his woman. Pulling on her sleeve, he asked, “What’s wrong?”
“N-Nothing.”
The woman was jolted out of her thoughts by his question. It appeared that she had to be mentally prepared whenever she met her man’s friends. Otherwise, she would not notice it if they got replaced by others when they changed outfits.
“Doc, my son used to live with me before, but because of some reason, he started staying with others. Even though he doesn’t acknowledge me now, I can tell that he recognizes me.”
She spoke rather vaguely about her son’s problems but knew that the doctor had understood her meaning.
“Did he perhaps experience something that made him unable to remember all the things you’ve done for him previously?”
Joe tried to come up with reasons for the boy’s action but realized along the way that he could not find a proper explanation for the child’s behavior from previous studies of children’s psychology.
A thought popped up in his head, but when he saw her genuine look of worry, he could not bring himself to say it. As a doctor, it was unethical to put a burden on the emotions of the patient’s family.
“Impossible. I’ve considered that possibility, too, but found it to be very unlikely. First, he remembers me yet still calls someone else ‘mommy.’ As a mother, how could I possibly bear it? Still, considering his illness, I could only do so.”
Pei Ge shook her head; nothing was more important than her child’s safety.
“I’ve, more or less, grasped the gist of his illness. Why don’t you guys bring the boy on your next visit? I’ll wait for you here.”
The certainty in his eyes made the man suspicious.
He knew his former classmate’s abilities. Back when he and this guy had rescued a girl on the streets, everybody thought that it was hopeless for her, but Joe was certain that he could save her.
