Chapter 6 A New Friend

(40)

Chapter 6 A New Friend After the class, the students left the training room one by one. Yue was standing in the sunshine, looking at her long shadow. “Mr. Shao, could we also stay here, like Yue? Your teaching is so good that we want to learn more.” Several girls were begging. “No way.” Shao Xun shook his head and said, “It is late. If you don’t leave now, the cafeteria will be closed. Don’t miss your dinner and blame me.” “It’s not a big deal, teacher. We seldom eat in the school cafeteria.” The girls were still trying to persuade him. A girl even said, “The school’s food is awful; I can’t even swallow it.” “Really?” Shao Xun smiled. “So you want to discuss the cuisine of our school with me?” “Absolutely not.” The girl became more anxious when she found he misunderstood. She wanted to say that they would like to spend more time with him, but she didn’t dare. Shao Xun surely knew their intentions, but he was pretending not to understand. When he’d studied at art school, he’d gotten used to this kind of pursuit by classmates. But his family did not allow him to have a girlfriend before graduation, so he never paid any of the girls any mind.   After graduation, the first girl who attracted him was Yue. On the first day he came to this college to teach, he met her in the restaurant. Her beauty amazed him, and her blue mood bothered him. Did she have a hard-to-forget past? He was fascinated by her, and was willing to tolerate her bad temper to make the best use of every opportunity to get to know her. When all the girls left with regrets, he asked her, “Yue, do you know why I asked you to stay after class?” As he stepped nearer to her, her expression was one of innocence and self-defense. “I won’t hurt you.” Shao Xun smiled; his smile was bright and crafty. Yue shook her head. “I know.” If he’d wanted to hurt her, he had no need to wait until now. Why was this guy full of so many nonsensical ideas? “I only have some questions for you.” Shao Xun, in fact, was a little embarrassed. “If you don’t want to answer me, you can pass.”   Yue looked back at him with doubt, but finally she agreed by nodding her head. Shao Xun was excited, like a child; she finally wanted to communicate with him peacefully. She was always like an ice cube—you wanted to melt her, to talk with her. “You still don’t want to forgive my misdemeanors from the restaurant?”   Yue was speechless. He’d asked her to stay for this tiny issue? Was she so meaningless in his eyes? “Mr. Shao, I’ve already forgotten that issue. I thought that you wanted to give me a special lesson because you said I lack the basic skills of dancing.” He did not know how to reply to her. In fact, he just wanted to use this opportunity to communicate with her on a regular basis. But how could he tell her his true purpose? He was her teacher—how could he harass her? “Yue, let me know why you planned to commit suicide that day,” he said, and then regretted it, for she had explained to him a thousand times that she’d been missing her hometown that day.   Yue sneered when she heard this question. “Mr. Shao, I don’t think I should answer this question anymore. Besides, you are so capable that you already know so much about me, so why bother to ask? I’m pretty much an open book from your point of view.” After saying this, she tried to go out, but was pulled back by him. “Yue, would you tell me the secrets in your heart? Why you are unhappy? Why did the guy at the restaurant blame you with such rage?” “I don’t know how to answer your question. . .” Yue told the truth; she’d had bad luck that day and met a stranger brimming with unhappiness and he’d blamed her to get his own gloom off his chest. The result was her losing her part-time job. “Yue, would you tell me? I just want to help. If you let this mental burden continue during your training, you won’t get a high mark. Though I have good enough teaching skills, I can’t help you pass the exam when you’re in such low spirits.” Yue was stunned by his explanation. He had described his intention so clearly because the excuse was ridiculous. She was bearing the pain of the brother entirely forgetting her, and trying to pass the hardest exams of the dance school. And he came to bother her now, of all times? Why wouldn’t he simply give up? But his seriousness somehow moved her, especially given his outstanding looks. If she had not met the brother before him, would she be attracted to him? She was shocked by this thought. He was her teacher; how could the idea even occur to her?   “Yue, would you like to be my friend?” Yue misunderstood him because of his informal smile. Just like the other boys, he is teasing me, Yue said to herself. “You are my teacher; I respect you, and that’s all. Please do not cross the line.” When she saw his hand, which was holding hers tightly, she sneered. “Though I am a student, I have my own private living quarters. But as a teacher, you moved to my building to supervise me and harass me all the time. Do you think this is appropriate? Teacher Shao?”   Shao Xun was surprised. He had never been treated like this by any other girl. He had been used to their flattery and smiles. She was the first one to regard him as a bastard. But anyway, she was the first for whom he felt different. When he was a little kid, Dad always told him that you should be brave enough to face any failure. How could he give up so easily? He wanted to make this a more interesting game. “I understand. I have made so many mistakes. I should invite you to dinner as compensation. Since all the students complain about the fare at our school cafeteria, I would rather take you out.” “. . .” She became wordless again. She should not have been surprised by his shamelessly thick skin! If Lin was here, she would have already given him a lesson.
