Chapter 59

Ch 59.01

As soon as the Sect Leader Command was given, every mountain lord in the entire sect received the order and proceeded.

At the Hour of the Rabbit, the command was given, then at the Hour of the Dragon, the entire sect immediately received a thorough understanding. Just before the Hour of the Dragon had passed, every peak in the entire Chen Ji Mountain was already ignited with fire, ritual money was distributed, and every disciple on the mountain was arranged according to their divisions. They queued up and burned the paper offerings.

*Hour of the Rabbit (卯时 – mǎo shí) – between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m.

*Hour of the Dragon (辰时 – chén shí) – between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.

At the Hour of the Horse, when the sun was shining brightly, I hid in Zhuo Chen Hall, lying in the shadow of the window. I looked outside, only to see specks of dust flying everywhere, and burning smoke creating a murky atmosphere. However, my heart was very happy. I felt like there was an abacus that was recording the money into my account, popping and banging my amount skyward. This burst of clanging sound made my muscles and bones limp from head to toe.

*Hour of the Horse (午时 – wǔ shí) – between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

So! Comfortable! All! Over!

Money, there was money, yes!

I was so happy that I wanted to roll around on the window. Behind me, Zhi Yan was looking at me: “Are you that happy?”

“You’ve never been poor.” I turned my head and asked her, “You don’t have to run errands to burn paper offerings anymore, aren’t you happy?”

“At first, I thought it was very annoying, but later on, I thought about burning paper offerings for you was really not that troublesome.” I did not anticipate that the words that Zhi Yan blurted out would warm my heart, “You deserve to have someone be good to you.”

She was drinking tea at the table. I turned my head and stared at her for a while, then I drifted to her side. Although I currently could not touch her, I still rubbed her head: “Little Cutie, we have a predestined fate. You can rest assured, when Big Sister’s soul returns to my body in the future, as long as there’s a bite of meat to eat, I’ll definitely give you a bone.”

Zhi Yan leered at me: “Am I your adopted puppy?”

This young lady, when she first saw me like when she saw Mo Qing, she trembled with fear from head to toe, but now she dared to use the side eye to look at me.

Tch, it was all because I had indulged her.

“What do you know, the bones in my, Lu Zhao Yao’s, hand, can it be ordinary bones?” I extended my hand, acting like I was pinching her chin. I deviously smirked at her, “If I give it to you, do you want it?”

Zhi Yan held the teacup, and distractedly stared at me for a while, then she immediately turned her head away shyly: “Aahh, Great Demon King, you’re so hateful! You tease whoever you see!”

I lay on the table, constantly laughing: “’Cuz I’m in a good mood.”

“Bang!” With a crisp sound, Zhuo Chen Hall’s door was suddenly pushed open by someone. Zhi Yan and I looked towards the door at the same time, only to see Mo Qing in black clothes with a calm and collected face, standing at the doorway.

The sunlight outside was bright enough, he was facing towards the inside of the room, making the expression on his face both cold and dark.

“Qin Zhi Yan.”

This name was called out without any warmth, Zhi Yan’s body trembled all over and immediately stood up. However, after looking at Mo Qing for a while, she only heard Mo Qing say three words: “Go burn paper.”

“Ah… Oh… Okay.” Zhi Yan hastily lifted up the hem of her dress, bowed her head, and hurried away without looking at anything.

In spite of everything, he frightened my little playmate away. I still did not even get the time to be concerned about her and Liu Cang Ling’s situation. I propped my head on the table, looking at Mo Qing’s awful complexion: “Such a vinegar jar.”

Mo Qing could not see me and stepped into the room, sitting where Zhi Yan had just sat, while picking up another teacup. He poured water and took a sip: “Lu Zhao Yao.” As he called out my name, I tilted my head before him and gazed at him. However, when I saw his lips move, I could not help myself from approaching, and plastered against the petals of his lips, lightly rubbing gently. At last, I felt a little warmth, and also heard the softening of his voice, after he paused:

“You should get a beating…”

I smilingly grinned.

I should get a beating. If you wanted to hit me, I would even willingly let you hit me, but I was quite certain that you would be unable to lay a hand on me.

After sitting in the room for a while, he naturally went back to his sleeping chamber, while I passed through the wall to watch him. Last night, he had already finished approving the documents. Today, the people of Wan Lu Sect received the Sect Leader Command to all go burn paper offerings, so no one came to disturb him. He sat on the bed, meditating cross-legged and adjusting the aura in his body.

When the brilliant light circled about his body, only then did I just discover that the aura in his body was not quite as vigorous as before.

It was even weaker than before, when he came back from fetching Liu He Tian Yi Sword…

Thinking about it, it was quite true. From the time he helped me fetch Liu He Tian Yi Sword, he always had wounds on his body. Then one after the other, he fought with that Jiang Wu, ripped apart Ling Ting Mountain, accompanied me in the fight with Luo Ming Xuan, and shot down the godly phoenix. Yesterday, he even dispersed his divine sense completely, and performed the Ninth Heaven Technique, searching for me everywhere.

Ch 59.02

This outwardly cold, inwardly passionate child, he always did not care much about his body. When he sustained injuries, he would not speak about it.

Seeing this, I was heartbroken. So I sat down beside him, and guarded him until evening came. When Zhi Yan returned, I entered her body, and urgently ran to go find Mo Qing.

Outside his sleeping chamber, no one blocked my path. Just when I ran inside, he happened to stop adjusting his aura and opened his eyes to look at me. I was simply too lazy to be polite with him. I dove forward and pushed him onto the bed, making him fall down. Then I hugged him, pinched his chin, and asked: “Ugly Little Monster, did you miss me today?”

When I pounced on Mo Qing, he was startled. He literally did not know whether to laugh or cry, but behind his tone was some indulgence: “Miss you.”

I lay on his body and continued to ask: “Today, you saw me teasing Zhi Yan, were you jealous?”

He flinched a little, turned his head away, coughed lightly, and admitted somewhat unnaturally: “Mhm…”

“You’ll even eat Zhi Yan’s vinegar, you big vinegar jar.” I laughed at him, laughed until his ears were somewhat red. Then I pinched his ears, playing with them in my hands, “But I just happened to like eating sour.”

As the light in Mo Qing’s eyes stirred slightly, I pressed my index finger against his lips: “When will I be able to recover my body, hmm?” Every day, the light energy would make me wobble and unable to do things, it could really make someone restless.

“The Dark Guards haven’t sent news back yet.” Mentioning about this, Mo Qing’s face became solemn. He embraced me, sat up, and said, “The magical arrays in front of Su Mountain aren’t easy to deal with. Two days later, if it’s necessary, I’m afraid that I’ll have to make a trip there myself.”

When I heard these words, I somewhat worriedly touched his back.

He captured my randomly moving hand: “I’m okay, don’t worry.”

“You don’t even take your own health seriously, can the Ninth Heaven Technique be used so carelessly?” When I mentioned this, I got a little angry, “If you couldn’t find me again, and your own divine sense dissipates, what were you planning to do?”

“If I couldn’t find you again, then it’s okay for my divine sense to dissipate.”

I was silent: “Were you very scared?”

Mo Qing embraced me tightly: “Mhm, very scared.”

I could no longer bear to rebuke him. As I sat with him for a while, Mo Qing suddenly spoke deliberately: “Besides, I thought… That you disappeared, partly because you no longer wanted to see me.”

Where did these words crop up? I became a little distracted: “Why?”

“Did Luo Ming Xuan mention to you, where you were born?”

“Ah…” I remembered, “He said that my clan was imprisoned by your father, the Demon King, in the valley, in order to protect you, who was sealed. Therefore, we were all born demonic, it could be considered as a curse given by the Demon King. Did you think that I would blame you for this?”

The corners of Mo Qing’s lips tightened: “It was because of me that you were persecuted by Luo Ming Xuan in such a way, which caused your loved one…”

“Ah, right, there’s also this connection.” As I said these words, I suddenly stood up and solemnly stared at Mo Qing, “Alright, you, Li Chen Lan, because of you, I was actually harmed so miserably!”

Mo Qing was stunned. Perhaps it was because I said these words so seriously. Or perhaps it was because he was always afraid that I would blame him like this. So for a moment, he just raised his head and gazed up at me just like this with his eyes revealing some remorse and heartache: “Zhao Yao… Sor-…”

Not letting him say the last part of the word “sorry”, I embraced him.

“It’s okay.”

Then I patted him on the back: “Did you become foolish, you actually still ask me these types of questions.” I stroked his head, comforting him: “So many generations of my ancestors were assigned the task of protecting you by your father, but not one of my ancestors has ever seen you, not even my maternal grandfather. While I accomplished this task that so many of them did not accomplish. If my grandfather knew, he would admire me before anything else. I even know what he would say…”

I let go of him and lifted his hand, treating it as a wine jar. I kissed the back of his hand, dryly coughed twice and made my voice husky, playing the role of my maternal grandfather: “Hmph, you, little slip of a lass, you don’t have any skills, but have better luck than anyone.”

In spite of himself, Mo Qing smiled.

As I looked at his rare smile, I also smiled slightly.

His identity caused him to bear a distinctive, heavy responsibility from an early age. The one who cursed my clan was his father, who I had never met. The one who harmed me and my maternal grandfather, and also wanted to harm him was the Golden Immortal. I had no reason to add another burden onto him.

“Mo Qing, I’m the one who is destined to protect you, and I also happen to want to protect you. This is my predestined fate with yours, so it’s not your sin.”

He was sitting on the bed, and reached out his hand to help me hook my scattered hair behind my ear, “Zhao Yao, you’re my everything.”

I fell silent, then laughingly bowed my head: “Your mouth is so sweet, I also love to eat sweet.”

Once the Hour of the Rat had passed, my soul left her body. As Zhi Yan regained her body again, she was thrown off of Mo Qing’s lap, experiencing the so-called unfamiliar at first, but familiar later on scenario. She only nodded twice, and hurriedly ran back towards her room.

*Hour of the Rat (子时 – zǐ shí) – between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Mo Qing then began to resume his meditation and adjustment of his aura.

I was idle and bored, so I drifted back to the room, chatting with Zhi Yan about her and Liu Cang Ling’s situation.

I asked her what she was going to do. Now that Liu Wei was dead, Liu Su Ruo was gone, and Jian Xin Sect was nearly destroyed in that previous battle with Mo Qing.

The people of Jiang Hu did not know that the one in Zhi Yan’s body was me. They only knew that this was the daughter of Qin Yu from the old days, relying on Wan Lu Sect, and becoming a competent disciple of Wan Lu Sect Leader. Afterwards, with Li Chen Lan, she destroyed Jian Xin Sect, and even killed Liu Wei.

Zhi Yan lowered her eyes slightly, her expression was no longer as scatterbrained as before: “Just let nature take its course. These past few days, you haven’t seen it, Brother Cang Ling has also woken up. He knows everything that has happened in this period of time. He also knows that he was controlled by Liu Su Ruo. He intends to return to Jian Xin Sect.”

“And you?” I asked her, “Do you want to go back with him or stay at Wan Lu Sect?”

The smile at the corner of Zhi Yan’s lips was somewhat bitter: “Even if Brother Cang Ling asks me to go back with him again, I won’t go back with him.  What’s more, right now, he… Hasn’t said those words again.” She paused for a moment, “Great Demon King, maybe in this world, there really is destiny, but regardless if it’s for me or for him, all of us can’t go back. We should treat each other as strangers later in our lives. No longer hurting each other, it’s our last bit of kindness to each other.”

When her words stopped here, Zhi Yan, who was so fond of crying, did not cry at this moment. As she calmly finished talking about these things, she appeared so normal.

“Little lass has become an adult.” As I said these six words, I did not know what else to say.

Naturally, it was her life. Since she made her decision, I could only say: “I don’t care about other things, but as long as Wan Lu Sect still exists even for one day, this is your place of refuge.”

After listening to these words of mine, the rim of Zhi Yan’s eyes miraculously turned red. She left her body and hugged me: “Great Demon King, I’m so thankful that I met you.”

I patted her back, saying nothing.

In the early morning of the following day, the sky had not yet brightened, when someone came to Zhuo Chen Hall.

When I saw the person outside the door, I slightly raised an eyebrow. It was actually Liu Cang Ling with his luggage on his back. He still had wounds on his body, but his mind was already clear, so standing and walking would not even be an issue.

Was he… Wanting to leave?

He stood outside the hall, waiting for Zhi Yan. When someone outside came to announce his presence,  Zhi Yan got out of the bed.

In fact, she was already awake at the moment when Liu Cang Ling first appeared. In the room, she combed her hair, arranged her clothes, and sat in front of the mirror for a long time, as if she did not want to go out. However, as time passed bit by bit, the person outside did not urge, so Zhi Yan finally stood up. In front of the mirror, she practiced a smile, then walked out the door.

“Brother Cang Ling.” This should be like how she used to greet Liu Cang Ling in the past.

Liu Cang Ling froze for a moment: “Zhi Yan.”

After calling out her name, he fell silent. For a long time afterwards, as the morning breeze blew across the mountain top, it blew the wispy clouds in the sky. Finally, Liu Cang Ling opened his mouth again: “I’m going back to Jin Zhou City, Jian Xin Sect… Can’t be without someone.”

Zhi Yan nodded: “Brother Cang Ling, take care. Someday…” She paused for a moment, raised her head, and looked at Liu Cang Ling with a warm smile, “Someday, I would like to see Jian Xin Sect raise its flag anew, the immortal wind will not change, be a clear-hearted example for the common people.”

Liu Cang LIng looked at Zhi Yan’s hair, which was being disturbed by the morning breeze. The corners of his lips trembled slightly, he clenched his fist, and swiftly turned away: “Take good care of yourself.”

The farewell from both sides was so calm. So calm that it was like a friendship of two very ordinary friends bidding each other farewell. Basically, no one would even think that behind them, there used to be an entangled past that was so complicated with deep hatred and resented grudges.

She watched Liu Cang Ling leave, carrying his sword. His figure gradually turned into a vague, little dot in the vast sky, lasting until he could no longer be seen in the end.

In fact, the two of them clearly knew that after going through so many things, they could never be together anymore after that. Zhi Yan was right, never seeing each other again was the last kindness to each other.

As I drifted to Zhi Yan’s side, she looked into the distance, the corners of her mouth still possessed a slight smile, but she still ended up crying. Her tears plopped down onto the ground one by one: “The gentleman wants to travel far, do not ask the gentleman’s return date, but ask the gentleman in the next life…”

“Great Demon King, I want to ask, can I still meet him again in the next life?”

I could not answer her. No one could answer her.
