Chapter 1 Part 1 – Day of Takeoff (1)

"Can people fly?"

One day, Xiaodan asked Xiaoxiang.

Two kids sat atop a hill, the setting sun died the skies crimson. In front of them, wisps of smoke rising from a small village could be seen.

"No, of course not."

Xiaoxiang looked up, gaze losing focus as he stared into the dimly lit stars, hazily flickering in and out of vision between the blue and red sky.

"Then why do you always stare at the sky? Every time a bird flies by, why do you always excitedly clap your hands and run around?"

"Because often in my dreams, I think of myself as a bird……"

That year, Xiang was only seven.

This plain sat next to the mountain. From atop the mountain, lustrous greenery surrounded all four sides. Mountain ranges littered in the distance, where snow and the clouds meet.

As if there were only these tens of tribes of people.

The passage of time from then always appeared terribly lethargic, the days never ended, sheep slowly ate away at the grass on the hills, but the grass never ran out. White clouds drifted again and again in the distant mountains, the shadow from the clouds would continue to transform in shape on the surface on and on.

But Xiaoxiang watched the sky while lying on the hills could see time flowing past in the pure blue boundless expanse.

If he closed his eyes, he could feel the gradual rotation between the earth and the sky.

This is a period where survival required power, within the vast expanse of land humans only occupied a very small area, beasts ran wild across the majority of areas. Children must learn combat and archery from young, only then could they protect themselves and hunt, win over girls, be useful to the tribe, receive the recognition and respect from others.

But Xiaoxiang as the worst among them. His body was the skinniest, even lambs could knock him over; his strength was the weakest, he couldn't even pull the slackest of bows. As if he was born deficient, his weight was less than half than those of the same age, slightly bigger girls could pick him up with one hand. A boy like him was always the laughing stock of his peers.

Xiang's elder sister Mu did not like her brother being laughed at by other people; as soon as she had the time she forced him to cut wood, throw rocks in the hopes of him becoming strong. But Xiang's efforts were met with absolutely no reward, making people despair.

Seeing Xiang once again knocked over by a piece of rock, Mu sighed: "Xiang, you're the only man in our family in the future. I would wish that you really never need to grow up."

Every day the amount Xiang ate was always very little, his father Yi was displeased, he would angrily fill up Xiang's bowl: "Eat it! Have a bit more! You're like a mouse!"

Xiang heard his father angrily chastise, but even after trying his best he could eat no more, forcing it would just end up with bloated stomach pains all night while lying in bed.
