Monster Paradise Chapter 2: Vampires

Lin Huang's heart started pounding as he saw the situation within Lin Xin's room.

Beneath the glaring lights of the room, a well built youth's upper body could be seen forcing its way through the shattered window. Its arm clawing towards Lin Xin's legs while muttering in an incoherent voice.

Lin Xin desperately crawled to her bed in an attempt to distance herself from the burly youth. She was shivering in fright and crying. Paralyzed by her fear it seemed she forgot that she could just get up and run away.

Lin Huang glaced at the youth. He had a head of red hair and his mouth was covered in blood which stained his shirt. However, his most striking feature was his eyes. They were completely red, without any white. Lin Huang broke out in a cold sweat as he recognized the identity of this invader. It was a vampire.

Lin Huang scoured the room and saw the school bag which Lin Xin had carelessly tossed onto left side of the door. He grabbed the bag and tossed it at the vampire in an attempt at distracting it.

Seeing the bag flying towards it the vampire tore into it with its claws.

Taking advantage of this momentary distraction, Lin Huang rushed to the bedside and lifted Lin Xin onto his shoulders and sped off towards the door.

Just as he stepped away from the bed, he heard a scream behind him. Lin Huang turned his head around and saw the vampire's blue-veined arm grabbing hold of Lin Xin's left ankle.

" Close your eyes!"

Lin Xin shut her eyes the moment she heard her brother shout. Lin Huang picked up the lamp near the bedside and smashed it against the vampire's arm.

The lamp was made out of a fluorescent stone which gave out a blinding flash of light and radiated extreme heat upon breaking. It was due to the stone's hazardous nature that rich people tend not to use this sort of lamp. However, at this moment, this cheap lamp had a life-saving effect!

As the lamp's bulb smashed against the vampire's arm, a blinding flash of light filled the room as the bulb shattered into pieces. The fluorescent stone burned into the vampire's arm as it rapidly rose in temperature. Howling in pain, the vampire quickly withdrew its arm.

As he felt the tension on his back loosening, Lin Huang rushed towards the door. Before the vampire could recover from the flash of light, he ran out of the door and down the stairs.

Lin Huang flicked every light switch he could find along the way he knew Vampires had a strong dislike of bright lights especially in the night. They enjoyed stalking their prey from the darkness and avoided areas with bright lights that exposed them despite the lights not causing any damage. This was the reason it was reluctant to enter Lin Xin's room.

Just as the siblings reached the first floor, they heard the sound of glass shattering coming from the floor above them.

'It was probably the sound of the light bulb shattering in Lin Xin's room'

"Go hide in the toilet and lock the door!" Lin Huang turned around and shouted at his sister.

"What about you brother?" Lin Xin had finally recovered from the shock and thought of her brother's safety.

" I can deal with him. I was the top graduate from the Hunter Preparatory Institution for a reason. Having you here would just be a distraction" Lin Huang coolly explained.

"Alright."

Lin Xin nodded her head and rushed off towards the restroom. While she was afraid of the vampire, she had complete confidence in her brother.

Lin Huang quickly connected to the HeartNet and sent out a SOS. He then proceeded to arm himself with a cleaver from the kitchen.

The weakest Vampires were ranked at BlackIron and possessed the strength of 10 Adult Humans. Furthermore, they possessed Blood Arts which made them stronger than most BlackIron monsters. A BlackIron Trainee hunter would have difficulty facing such a creature, let alone the top graduate of the Hunter Preparatory Institution.

Lin Huang's words were mostly to comfort his sister. He was fully aware of his chances of winning. Almost non-existent.

However, what surprised him was the unusual calmness he experienced in the face of such a terrifying opponent. Information regarding vampires quickly flowed into his head.

Vampires are a kind of monster which disguise themselves as normal humans during the day but indulge their bloodthirsty cravings during the night, reverting to their true form.

They fed on the blood of humans and especially favored the blood of young girls. Their sense of smell is able to pick the scent of blood within hundreds of kilometres.

Even the weakest vampire were able to double their combat strength with the help of their blood arts. They are able to gather their blood energy around their bodies to form a protective layer. This energy layer can become wings, a tail, and even claws and other forms of weapons, in order to increase their combat effectiveness.

Vampires detest bright lights due to their nature but were not afraid of it. Their only weakness is a substance known as the 'Blood Suppression Factor' which is a rare plant extract.

To be exact, the Blood Suppression Factor is toxic to any creature which is made up of flesh and blood, including humans. If this substance was smeared on any wound, it would quickly penetrate the blood circulatory system and cause the death of red blood cells. A weaponized form of this substance, known as  Blood Suppression Toxin, is available commercially and is often used by hunters to smear on their weapons.

The Blood Suppression Factor had an unparalleled suppressive effect on vampires. Their protective blood layer is easily penetrated by weapons smeared with said toxin. Once their wounds have been infected, their bodies would start to rot starting from the infection point. Within 3 hours, they would be reduced to a pile of rotted flesh.

However, this toxin comes with a hefty price tag. Even licensed hunters were not able to afford large quantities of this toxin and could only keep a tiny amount for self defense. With Lin Huang's current savings, he was naturally unable to afford such a expenditure.

As Lin Huang was mulling over these issues, his pinkie ring started to vibrate.

" I am a hunter called Li Lang. Are you the person who sent out the SOS? Can you explain the situation?" A youthful and calm voice came out from the HeartNet's SOS channel.

" Our home has been invaded by a vampire…." As Lin Huang started explaining, a rumbling sound came from the floor above. A shadow leaped from the second floor and landed near him in a cloud of soot.

"Lock onto my ring's coordinates and please hurry over!"

He swiftly keyed in his coordinates and hung up. He needed to focus on the enemy in front of him… An enemy who had the strength of 10 men.

Bang, Bang, Bang…

Heavy footsteps echoed out from the cloud of soot as the vampire approached Lin Huang. A cold sweat ran down his back as he saw a pair of blood red eyes staring at him.

However, something caught the beastial attention of the vampire causing it to gaze in the direction of the restroom. It smelt the scent of its of previous prey. Behind that door was the source of this irresistible scent.

As its desire for food overwhelmed the anger it felt towards Lin Huang, saliva started dripping from its mouth and onto the floor. The vampire ignored Lin Huang as it charged towards the restroom.

"Hey! You seemed to have forgotten about something?! " Lin Huang shouted as he simultaneously threw a cleaver at the vampire.
