K ~ Seven Stories: 24 Pieces
Piece 21: Isana Yashiro (The Room of Happiness)
by Takahashi Yashichirou

That room was a very soothing place. A warm place where there are those who would answer ‘Good to see you’ whenever I return there with a 'I’m back’.

This is probably what is called a place of belonging. That’s why I want to stay here.

In dead middle of that small room, there is a low tea table. A spot where we all eat, surrounding it on all side, and talk and do many other things.

This is probably what peace and serenity is like. That’s why I want to have my spot at that table.

When I take a seat there, I find everyone else there too. With them, my chest feels warm, my heart bounds and sometimes aches, but they still give me that happy feeling.

This is probably what family feels like. That’s why I want to spend as much time with them as possible.

That boy is somewhat loud, but very kind. He takes righeousness and honor to heart and lives his life accordingly.

That girl is whimsical and free, but she is also in constant need of attention and gets lonely easily. A mischievous girl who loves surprising people above all else.

That person is many times smarter than I am and always helps me when I need it. It’s quite unsettling because nothing escapes her attention.

That other person is strict and serious and walking his path in life steadfast and straight. He boasts unyielding toughness.

Just spending time with all of them is enough to make me feel delighted. Under the bright rays of the sun, we laugh together and mull over problems together. And in the dark of the night, when we turn on the lights, we make racker and get scolded, together.

“Good gracious, you’re hopeless.”
“This is my seat, and that’s it, meow!”
“You cannot prance around looking like that, Neko-chan.”
“Do something about her, Weissmann.”
“I wish I could, but, uh…”

There is nothing wrong with this. There is no way I would ever consider happiness to be wrong.

That’s why I rest and relax in that room. In my soothing and bright place of belonging.

And today, as always, we all say in unison the word you say when you’re with your family, “Itadakimasu”.
