The door was slammed open. Nan Yan turned her head and saw Concubine An, Gao Yu Rong, along with Fulan and Xique, barge in.
She stood up in surprise.
What are they doing here?
Still, she went to welcome them at once. “This servant greets Concubine An. May this servant ask to know the reason for Concubine An's visit to Chun Xi Palace?"
Gao Yu Rong glanced at her and said with a smile, “Oh, it’s nothing important. I lost something, so I brought them here to look for it.”
Nan Yan’s face changed.
Gao Yu Rong added, “Female Officer Si, don’t be mistaken. No one is accusing you of stealing anything at the moment. However, we are afraid that some people might later. Therefore, it would be better to get rid of all suspicions now so that no one would misunderstand you in the future."
Then, she waved her hand and ordered the servants, "Search this place.”
“Wait!"
Fulan was about to go and start searching, only Nan Yan raised her hand to stop her. She stared at Gao Yu Rong, then smiled and advised, “Concubine An's words are right, but also wrong. There is no reason to suspect me so how could anyone misunderstand?"
“Of course, this servant has no problem with Concubine An having people searched this room. However, before they do, can Concubine An give an explanation?”
Gao Yu Rong had originally heard of Nan Yan’s fear of dying and thought that as a Female High Advisor Officer, she would be weak and easy to bully. She did not expect this answer from her at all.
She was stunned for a moment, but then laughed, “Whether you are innocent or not, it will be made clear to everyone. Is this explanation enough?"
“Of course not,” Nan Yan sternly uttered, “This servant is suddenly accused of stealing. Can Concubine An give this servant an explanation as to why?"
“An explanation? The likes of you don’t need one. ”
Gao Yu Rong had previously never cared much about Nan Yan before, but today she had managed to contradict her repeatedly and that made her furious.
Concubine An calmed down and reworded, “Today, something was lost. There could be a thief among us. This concubine was ordered by Her Highness to investigate. If Female Officer Si requires an explanation, then why not go to Shou An Palace and ask Her Highness?"
Si Nan Yan spoke, “All right, this servant will go to Shou An Palace for an explanation. Concubine An will be welcome to search after this servant has been enlightened on the matter. However, should there be any reason to believe this servant has been wrongfully accused, then this servant can’t let you search!”
Gao Yu Rong's face fell.
She never expected this small Female High Advisor Officer, that used to only be a palace maid that followed His Highness around, could be so bold!
She thought about it, “Good, let’s go!"
After these words were said Nan Yan followed her out of Chun Xi Palace and soon they reached Shou An Palace. Upon entering, she saw Xia Yunting kneeling in the middle of the room, sweating and looking pale. After a quick look, Nan Yan went to kneel in front of Xu Miaoyin.
“This servant greets Her Highness Empress."
Xu Miaoyin only glanced at her and asked, “Concubine An, did you find it?”
Nan Yan rushed to say, “This servant did not let them in Chun Xin Palace."
“What? You dare to disobey this Palace!?"
“This servant does not dare. It’s just…
there should always be a reason before accusing anyone of a crime. This servant is the same. Her Highness already sent people to search Chun Xi Palace so this servant was hoping Her Highness could shed some light as to why the stolen item is believed to be in this servant’s room."
Xu Miaoyin pondered for a while and replied, “No.”
"In this case, could Her Highness share with everyone, why is this servant the only one suspected?”
Xu Miaoyin’s brow was furrowed and before she could find words to answer Nan Yan, Wu Wan slapped the table angrily.
Bang! Bang!
"Si Nan Yan! You are just a little servant, how dare you question Her Highness?”
