Y consonant corresponds to A. S. _G_ before a vowel. This has generally in S. been printed ?, from the resemblance of the A. S. letter to the form of the Roman ?, although there is not the least affinity as to power.
This, I apprehend, must be ascribed to the inaccuracy, or to the ignorance of the writers or copyists of MSS., who, misled by the very near resemblance of the letters, substituted the long _z_, or ?, for the A. S. _g_.
In the south of S., _y_ consonant is prefixed to a variety of words which are elsewhere pronounced without it; as, _yaik_ for _ache_, _yield_, age, for _eild_, &c.
